[SuSE Linux] Stalled downloads
It is on your end. ping and traceroute programs can show how fast the computer responds. ping hostname.com will tell how many ms it takes to send date to and from your machine. traceroute hostname.com well show the route it could of took. * * * means a time out or a firewall does not let udp packets which is what traceroute uses. if you ping your isp and your are on a dial up 128 - 300 ping time to the isp is what you should get. If it is any higher then that think about finding a better isp that is not so over loaded. another note 35 seconds to download kernel 2.2.0pre1 Charles <A HREF="http://www.theverge.com</A">http://www.theverge.com</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

This is a usual symptom of incorrectly configured hardware at your ISP: some switches or routers they use. I am experiencing it now due to poorly compatible/misconfigured ATM equipment my provider is using for traffic management via our main link to the outside world. In theory, things like frame-relaying or traffic shaping should work completely transparent for a user. In real life, using these techniques often causes many network clients to hang or stall. Ftp clients are among the most affected, due to the nature of FTP protocol. Just my $.02, I'm not an expert... Try to lower MTU size if you are using PPP link, this may help. I said 'may'... Oh well, I forgot the most simple 'cure': at the same time start a couple of ping sessions and and one or two tracerote's to the same host your are ftp'ing from. Sooner or later you will be able to break your ISP's "shaper". Beware, if you start >50 traceroutes at once you may receive rather furious reaction from ISP's sysadmin :-))) Cheers, Ivan -- ----------------------------------------------------------- "Ivan Adzhubei" <ivan@protein.bio.msu.su> ----------------------------------------------------------- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Assuming you are using ppp over a modem, try setting your window to a smaller size: /sbin/route -v add default window 16384 dev ppp0 After you have pppd up and running. I had this problem a year ago. Turned out to be an obscure IP masquerading bug in, I think, kernel 2.0.32 or something. I upgraded the kernel on my masq server and it went away. - Scott Ken Archer wrote:

I am running xfree86 3.3.3, and have a STB Velocity 128. It seems that my video just sucks. It is just kinda slow: i.e., when running something simple like xscreensaver, on the cool 3d hacks, it draws like 2 frames a second or something. I am not expecting anything astounding as the card is not exceptional or anything, but everything seemed to have much faster video when I ran windoze. (last time I asked this someone told me to look at the xscreensaver site---no help since the documentation does not address this problem, and more importantly, I think this is not just a problem with xscreensaver but rather something with the way X is using/not using my card.) Thanks much and Happy New Year 9almost), Chris
I agree. Just after installing xfree86-3.3.3-3, I swapped out my ATI Xpert@play (mach64) AGP and put in my STB Velocity 128 AGP (Nvidia Riva). It's got rid of some horrible screensaver display glitches, but: (1) It does seem that the graphics are rather slower. I can get 1280x 1024 and 1600x1200 to work, as well as an apparently undocumented 1152x864 mode, but not 1024x768, at least not with this Belinea 19" monitor; the X server dies saying that it couldn't initialise the card. (2) The card implements 32-bit colour depth but not 24-bit. So I can't get a True Colour mode at 1200x1024, I have to use a 16-bit mode! That is (according to the driver) a hardware limitation. Grrr! (3) Gradient fills don't work properly. In KDE, both the two-colour destop background and the window title bar gradients are horribly banded even in 32-bit mode. I don't see how this could be the driver though - surely it used the card's graphics builtin graphics functions to do that. (4) Although the card's 2D performance in Win95 is just fine apart from a few display glitches, under Linux it seems a whole lot slower than the ATI card. The XFree86/XSuSE drivers don't seem to make the most of the card's acceleration features. From what I read elsewhere, it seems the XFree86 people just aren't that interested in, or don't have the resources for, performance enhancements to drivers for cheap popular cards. I'd guess that probably a 2nd-hand Matrox Millenium would give you what you want (in terms of price vs. 2D performance anyway) but I'm really just guessing based on circumstantial evidence and hearsay. I'll probably go looking for one myself soon. It's got to be better than this... Ralph, I have a old Matrox Mystique with 4MB on it that is pretty respectable, tied in with a 17" CyberVision (ds69) monitor. I've found that Matrox is respectable with the Linux community in providing driver info, plus they continually update their bios and drivers. Note: to update your BIOS you need a DOS partition. All in all, I'm satisfied with the Matrox line, although I will be upgrading in the future. Btw, I'm not associated with Matrox, etc. Regards, Dana -- dlaude@execpc.com Dana J.
