[opensuse] One thing driving me crazy - opensuse 11.1/kde4.2 factory/effing nvidia Geforce
hi My screen can go black when clicking on an icon/widget, everything is still running e.g. Alt-Tab displays a list of running apps, but i cannot get the display back unless I Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. it is really ruining my KDE4 experience. Ive tried the stable and beta version of the Nvidia driver but its the same result. I don't even know how to explain a this in a bug report because i can't reproduce it at will. aaaaaaggghhhhhh How do i set it to use the "nv" driver in yast? I might as well give it a try. regards Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Your symptoms indicate plasma is crashing. Since it has been working pretty stable here, I would suggest rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc and rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc and rebuilding your IIRC krunner (what used to be kicker) after logging out and back in. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Joe.
Ian, This is a KDE/Plasma bug that is known and logged on KDE's bug tracker. The documented workaround is to disable desktop effects, although what fixed it for me (even with desktop effects enabled) was to uncheck "improved window handling" in the kde desktop effects settings. I'm also running a GeForce FX5500 and the 173.14.12 drivers (on 11.0/KDE4.2). Hi Ian, what driver version you use? What card? Any problems with updates? The nv driver you can set with sax2 -m 0=nv from terminal, when xorg is not running. Terminal Ctrl-Alt-F2 Login as root init 3 sax2 -m 0=nv init 5 && exit -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The nv driver you can set with sax2 -m 0=nv from terminal, when xorg is not running.
Terminal Ctrl-Alt-F2 Login as root init 3 sax2 -m 0=nv init 5 && exit

If it stops after you disabled the "present windows" effect, this is a bug that has already been fixed. A long time ago this happened with the nvidia binary driver, if the video RAM was full, but I think it was only windows and not the whole screen. I use the 180.29 driver from the repos. thanks for your response

If it stops after you disabled the "present windows" effect, I think i'm being as dim as my screen here, where's the "present windows" effect? I also get a mini demo of the same issue when the splash screen is loading KDE, it loads the Disk Drive, tools, World in order fine but it turns the screen black as soon as it hits the cashew and it recovers after a second and continues happily.
this is a bug that has already been fixed. is it related to the version of the driver (see below)

Sven I've got an old Geforce FX 5500 AGP/SSE/3DNOW! card so that version of the driver is no good for me. I'm using the updated beta version of the one for my card ( 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.16) but that hasn't stopped the problem.
