I'm about to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 w/ the switchable graphics (Optimus). Any hardware I should avoid (e.g., WiFi adapters, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth)? Any advice on make switching between the Intel integrated graphics and Nvidia discrete graphics easy?
TIA,
Jeffrey
I am seriously considering purchase of a T510 as well and would be quite interested in what people like/dislike about running opensuse on this system.
Anyone running the T510?
Jesse

Hi Stuart, Thanks for the link. I had come across that posting while researching the laptop, as well as the review from LinLap. I was hoping to see if anyone else had any experience with the unit, especially any problems they ran into that I may want to take into consideration before I buy. I have to say though, that it sounds like a good laptop for Linux users. :-) Jesse -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I wish I had a review of this HP Pavilion V7-2230sa before i was given it by the insurance company - however you dont get a lot of choice with them do you.. This laptop had some weird bios settings that just prevented the bios from finding the wireless. Nearly every distrobution I tried (opensuse included) reported broken bios issues that was with 11.2, but it was fixed for 11.3. Before this I had a Samsung R720 and to say the two have basically the same specs, 4gb ram, ati chipset, the R720 worked like a charm until I sat on it. Still not over keen on this HP but stuck with it now lol. If you try it - do let us know how you get on. Stuart On Wednesday 02 Feb 2011 22:26:35 Jesse L. Purdom wrote:

I will. Up until recently I had been running opensuse 11.1 on an Acer Aspire 5515 for my work laptop. It is a fairly solid low-cost machine, and since much of what I do is via remote session (such as RDP or VNC), I don't require a very beefy system. Jesse et al, XXThis is what I've found so far from Googling and other e-mail forums. Also, Lenovo models are frequently reported in the Ubuntu laptop compatibility forum as working out of the box. Mentions in the Ubuntu laptop incompatibility forum are few and I found none for the T series. Switchable graphics support is not yet present. The auto-switching available in Windows will never be available, at least from NVidia. At the very least, you will have to log out to switch cards; reboot and switch in the BIOS is a strong possibility. People are working on hot switching video, but it is kludgy. If this wasn't my only computer and my bread winning computer, I might be tempted. The Intel graphics apparently has 3D acceleration and is supported. 3D acceleration in the Nvidia card is not yet supported, though 2D acceleration is. Fingerprint reader probably isn't supported yet, though it probably will in the near future (new model of long line of supported vendor). There are bugs in the Intel N-1000 WiFi card driver, but fixes exist, though I've forgotten if they are in the vanilla kernel sources yet. Other Intel WiFi card seem to work out of the box. If any of this information is out of date or doesn't apply to OpenSuSE, I've love a correction.
