I guess he is requesting openSUSE packagers not to install those by default, only on request. Because it is not a needed package unless you have an HP printer. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yes. So point him to the right place :-) But where would that be? :-? Here he can try to rise awareness and comments. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Here he can try to rise awareness and comments.

I agree with Carlos, there is no reason to immediately jump in and play email police demanding that the topic be taken somewhere else. It can be discussed here. If we can have a three day conversation of RAW format images, which has nothing to do with Linux and Opensuse we can at least have a brief conversation about a packing decision for Opensuse before someone starts thumping their chest and making demands about where to take that discussion. There are a LOT of packages that get installed without explicit selection, including drivers for many different types of printers. Having hplip installed causes no particular problems. It probably shouldn't be started automatically, but having it installed is no different than having cups installed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Having hp* on systems that have no and never will have HP products installed wastes disk space, and bandwidth at updates times. Cups is usually needed for any printing to occur. OTOH, at installation time, goto detailed package selection, put hp in search box, and taboo the results, to prevent hp stuff from ever getting installed in the first place. This process works for other cruft as well, e.g. gtk?-immodule*. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." There are two ways to packaging decisions. One is to have everything that you might ever need installed, or at least recommended, to makes things easy when using the system (the kernel does this, it has drivers for everything possible, but most of them as modules). Space is cheap nowdays, and so is bandwidth - but not always, not everywhere. The other method is to install the minimal amount possible, and instead install what is necessary later, on demand, automatic or manual. Both things are not possible, and each person wants one of the methods and dislikes the other :-) On the other hand, we have another issue: recommended packages are handled differently since 13.2. It is not easy to disable them. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
