I'm having a problem compiling the modules for vmware workstation 4.5.2. I've jumped through the hoops of make cloneconfig and make prepare but it is still claiming that my headers are off. This may be because the install gave me an SMP kernel but I needed the default kernel so I installed that after the initial smp kernel was installed. If someone has this running on 9.3, I will assume my problems lie with the change in kernels.... Thanks.

Bruce, I have vmware workstation 4.5.2 running on SuSE 9.3. It wouldn't compile for me either, until i applied the vmware-any-any-update90.tar.gz patch. That can be found at ftp.cvut.cz/vmware. I did the following steps. make cloneconfig make prepare execute runme.pl found in the vmware-any-any-update90.tar.gz That patch patches the vmware modules and then invokes vmware-config.pl. The patched modules compile fine. The first time I ran the Guest OS, Windows XP Pro, the machine locked up completely. I rebooted and everything was fine after that. I need XP for some office apps here at work. So far no problems at all. Mike

Thanks!! That was what I needed. I tried looking for a patch on the VMWARE site but found nothing. They sure aren't very helpful to their customers.. It's up and running now. Thanks again.

VMware Workstation 5 has much better support for 2.6 kernels. The upgrade from 4.5.2 is only $99, or free if you recently bought WS4. I've run both on 9.2 without having to use the any-any patch. I always wait until a new SuSE release gets some "seasoning" for few months before I upgrade, so I can't say how WS5 works on 9.3. You may also want to try as root from the /usr/src/linux dir: make clean make cloneconfig make prepare vmware-config.pl I found running make clean was necessary after upgrading some (not all) kernel versions. HTH, Mark
