Hello! For some obscure reason (probably lack of space), SuSE has decided to remove reiserfs support from the standard kernel, including the one in the bootdisk. Now, how can I add reiserfs support to the SuSE 7.2 bootdisk process, e.g., to install or update SuSE from a reiserfs partition? Best regards, Afonso Infante.

What kernel are you talking about? -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

The 2.4.4("-4GB") that is the default for SuSE 7.2, and is the one that comes in the bootdisk. It does not have reiserfs support compiled-in... Best regards, Afonso Infante.

The 2.4.4 kernel is optimised by SuSE for reiserfs. It also uses modules so you need to have /boot as ext2 to ensure that the module is loaded. M

No, I'm not talking about the normal boot process. I'm talking about the bootdisk: the 1.44Mb floppy boot disk. If I boot from that floppy, how can I load the reiserfs module? Best regards, Afonso Infante.

See http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_lilo_reiserfs.html.
This is for a generic lilo boot floppy. My problem is with the SuSE 7.2 bootdisk, the one used for upgrading and/or installing a brand new SuSE system! I cannot incorporate reiserfs.o into the INITRD of that boot floppy because: 1. there is a bunch of other things on that initrd, so I can't simply create a new one (I would have to *add* something to it) 2. even if I new how to add things to a initrd, reiserfs.o wouldn't fit anyway. Best regards, Afonso Infante.

I'm afraid you've lost me on this one. The URL (here it is again http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_lilo_reiserfs.html) will get you out of trouble if you upgrade to SuSE 7.2 using reiserfs and get a kernel panic because the reiserfs module isn't loaded. Why would you want to change to boot disk that comes with the distro? reiserfs is loaded as a module into the initial ramdisk before /root is mounted after the installation is finalised. M
Hello!
because the reiserfs module isn't loaded. Why would you want to change to boot disk that comes with the distro? reiserfs is loaded as a module into the initial ramdisk before /root is mounted after the installation is finalised.
Well, what if: A) the system to upgrade is on a reiserfs partition? B) Better yet, what if I want to install SuSE 7.2 FROM a hard disk partition (one of the options as an installation source, along with FTP, CD, etc.) which is in reiserfs format? Best regards, Afonso Infante.
I've been able to upgrade from one version to another with reiserfs using CD #1. That said, I always have /boot as ext2 filesystem. See the thread 'Installation issues' for information about loading modules into initrd. MOn Saturday 11 August 2001 7:03 pm, Afonso Infante wrote:

But I *don't* have CD 1. That's the problem! Besides, the machines to upgrade don't have a CD-ROM driver either! And I know perfectly how to load modules into initrd. Problem is I would need to change initrd on the floppy bootdisk then, and I can't do that (for the reasons I explained before!). Best regards, Afonso Infante.
