I feel really stupid but I have to admit I need help getting lynx to work. I've installed it from the rpm included with 6.3. It went in just fine. When I start the program it comes up and I can read the help files and look at the lynx.cfg file. However, I can't access any website. If I enter "lynx www.suse.com" I get a message that it is unable to access the document. Once that message disappears I get the following verbage... Looking up www.suse.com first. Can't Access `http://www.suse.com/' Alert!: Unable to access document. lynx: Can't access startfile Gerry "The lyf so short, the craft so long to learne" Chaucer -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It works perfectly. I should have mentioned that I have a functional DNS, sendmail, fetchmail, pine, pop3, netscape, and w3m system. It's just pine that doesn't want to run. Gerry, do you need to access http pages via your ISP's proxy server? In that case you'll need to set some environment variables via yast/rc.config/ /etc/profile. Something like HTTP_PROXY ... There are dummy entries in /etc/profile, but these get overwritten by SuSEconfig with entries from rc.config. Juergen, thank you for your reply. You gave me the hint I needed. I hadn't even thought of yast. I went in to rc.config and there it was...an incorrect entry in the HTTP_PROXY setting. I used to use a proxy server to get to the internet but recently changed to ip forwarding. Looks like this setting was missed but nothing had complained so I didn't notice it! try lynx 209.144.167.151 If that works, then your Name Servers are not set up correctly. Set them up with whatever tool you have -- kppp, /etc/rc.config, yast or whatever. If it doesn't work, then something is seriously wrong with your internet connection -- ?not connected ?pppd not working -- etc Never trust a man in a suit cll -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I get the same response. lynx doesn't work. I think I'll just forget lynx. I was only trying it as a lark. I use netscape and w3m. I don't use ppp or dhcp. This host has a fixed ip and I connect to the internet via a gateway system running ipforwarding. The network has a working DNS, pop3, netscape, pine, w3m, fetchmail, nslookup....you name it and it's likely on this system and is working...just lynx is having a problem.
