Good deal, That makes sense. The old "mysql" extension was deprecated long ago moving to "mysqli" and more predominantly "pdo_mysql" now. I am not familiar with "mysqlnd". All extensions provide the same functionality as far as providing access to your databases -- they just do it differently. I've used mysqli and pdo_mysql and between the two have found mysqli closer to the old mysql, but also found I prefer the pdo_mysql interface a bit more.
