I've successfully used the Sis 6236 AGP card with XFree86 and SuSE Linux 6.1. The card works fine for me under Windows 98, using the drivers supplied on the SiS CD. So (based on my experience), I don't think the card itself is bad, and I don't blame SiS. They just don't have good Linux support yet. I'm sure the card will be fine when the X server for it moves out of the alpha stage. I haven't tried DirectX games, so can't speak to Mr. Moore's experience about that. That being said, here's the scoop: Do *not* use the SVGA server. Use the new "sis" server, available for FTP at <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/X/XFCom/xsis/glibc2/"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/X/XFCom/xsis/glibc2/</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/X/XFCom/xsis/glibc2/</A</A>>; go to that directory and pick up either xsis-990317.tgz or xsis-3.0-0.i386.rpm. Install it. Then, type "which X". Make sure that the X in your path is a symbolic link to a file with a name something like (XF86_SiS). Some documentation for that server (the same as included with the distribution files I mentioned) is at: <A HREF="http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.3.1/SiS.html"><A HREF="http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.3.1/SiS.html</A">http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.3.1/SiS.html</A</A>> This is an Alpha quality server; I've gotten it to work stably at: 1024x768, 24 bpp; 800x600, 24bpp, and 640x480, 24bpp. Trying higher resolutions has not worked for me using this server. (Under Windows 98, however, I can do up to 1600x1200 without problems.) Unfortunately, Netscape doesn't handle 24 bpp as well as one would like; Netscape expects 32bpp or 16bpp. When Netscape sees 24bpp, it uses its monochrome internal icons. (You'll see what I mean.) I'll try to make a copy of my /etc/XF86Config file available for you to use. That would probably be less stressful than trying to produce your own. Using the "sw_cursor" option will probably be helpful, by the way; I needed it at some resolutions. Unlike Mr. Moore, I didn't have trouble with keeping bitblt and accel enabled; I explicitly told the X server that the card had 8 megabytes. I had this card and got it to work try using sax to configure "sax -s svga" my vga was installed but broken oh well. Use the svga server. I think it's in video card expert options or something like that click on : no accel , no bitblt , and maybe sw cursor. Also set the memory to 4mb according to the guys at accelX 4mb is for 2d and 4mb is for 3d and since there isn't 3d linux support for this card don't bother. If I remember right I got mine up to 24bp 1024 by 768. If you actually use <gag>windows</gag> and get this card to play directx games properly let me know how you did it???? I replaced my SiS 6326 alleged AGP with a PCI TNT Rivia 16mb and it's great in linux and <gag>win</gag>. That will be the last SIS product I ever buy....... Good Luck hope this helps. Ian
