Listmates,
I finally decided to take the plunge and eliminate the last bastion of MS from my life -- that means the laptop. I installed a new hard-drive loaded XP (well I still need QuickBooks) and then went to load 10.2 for my regular OS on my laptop. The install was *hellish* and required rescue and manual creation of swap, but that is another story. The system is now fully installed with everything working, wireless, etc...
During install and after I finally succeeded in getting everything installed, my laptop overheats, freezes and dies. I have powersaved set on "acoustic" with active cooling, but the system still overheats. This box runs warm under windows, but never dies. One confusing "clue" is that under the suse install, the fans seem to run *more* than they do under windows, but the system still overheats? When you look at kpowersave, it shows *two* CPU's (there is only 1) and the first CPU is pegged at 3300 and the second at 1200-1600. I don't have a clue what this means other than it looks like my CPU is working overly hard on something.
I have googled and found information suggesting uninstalling zend/zmd (which was nothing but trouble during install) and also setting
As I remember removing those troublesome apps is generally recommended for 10.2 and they will be gone from 10.3. Another hog in 10.2 is Beagle which runs forever unless removed.
You can also get a secondary cooling device on which to mount your laptop.
See if the software fixes work. Otherwise get the cooler.
Do you have a multithreaded processor because it will appear to the system as multiheaded.

Carl, Thanks for the reply. I have disabled zmd and beagle and that has helped a bit with the laptop dying. I am beginning to suspect that the problems with the Toshiba P35 is *not* overheating. I have been through the acpi in great detail and the fans/cooling seems to be working properly. Another clue is that when the laptop freezes and dies, you can immediately restart the computer without any problems and it will come back to life for random amounts of time suggesting that heat is not the problem. What is strange is that on occasions I can use the laptop under heavy load for hours and it doesn't miss a beat. Other times, the computer will only run for 3 minutes before locking up. I'm looking into whether it may be an apic irq_balancer problem. Presently I'm running with the boot parameter of "noapic" and I haven't had any problems this morning. I'll keep watching it.
