Professional web development tools for Linux?
Hello SuSE folkz, I'm looking for any (commercial or GPL) professional web development tools for Linux, which can resemble functionality of Macromedia Dreamweaver or Adobe GoLife. It's a very sad situation that professional web development tools exist mostly in Windows world. Could somebody tell me please if there is something for Linux? I'm not talking about Bluefish and Quanta. Thank you in advance. Alex
Unfortunately, as far as I know Bluefish and Quanta are it. =( Jordan Michaels DBA Walla Walla Community College jordan.michaels@wwcc.edu http://www.wwcc.edu/ 509.527.4266 -----Original Message----- From: Alex Daniloff [mailto:alex@daniloff.com] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 9:27 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Professional web development tools for Linux? If you do PHP there's Zend Studio http://www.zend.com/store/products/zend-studio.php Preston
Well, yeah. If you do PHP there's also PHPed from nusphere: http://www.nusphere.com/ But the cool thing about Dreamweaver and GoLive is that they're not entirely language specific. Something like Dreamweaver or GoLive could be just the killer app linux needs to make it a good option for a desktop system. I guess we get to wait and see which company will do it first. this is a good point, I agree. Also, doesn't IBM have a *nux version of their offering (name excapes me at the moment). It is supposed to be relatively low cost. -- Gary I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.

HomePage Builder AKA HPbuilder. It is a Windows app that runs under Wine. I like it for building static pages. Nothing fancy. Better than HTML editors like Bluefish. Jeff
Quanta, which comes with the KDE package, is pretty good. Details on sourceforge: http://quanta.sourceforge.net Hope this helps Basil Fowler On Monday 04 Aug 2003 19:21, Jeffrey L. Taylor wrote:

please forgive me if this question is too personal....but if you already realize that products like dreamweaver and golife are very good...why don't you use them? http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/productinfo/sysreq/ From what I recall from my days as a field tech....most sites that worked with graphics a lot used macs....a lot of high end graphics software is made to work on windows or macs. (photoshop, quark, etc) the above link proves my point.... regards, Oskar
I use Dreamweaver MX on Windows XP. Given the choice, I would use Dreamweaver on the Linux platform. (and pay to use it there too) Dreamweaver is the only reason I use windows. Hello Oskar,

The problem is that out small venture has been built up completely on Linux environment. We couldn't bear M$ software and licensing costs. It's way too expensive for our tight budget. We can buy a package of commercial web devel. appl. but we can't pay a hefty ransom to M$ for their OS. Regards. Alex

This can run dreamweaver just fine....apple also has support for schools or non-profit organizations.

1. I'll require us to buy a bunch of Mac workstations. Just for web development!? It's not a cheaper solution vs. M$ ether. 2. Mac "supports" schools and non-profits in order to lock users into their OS and preserve its market share for the future capitalization. I saw these poor Mac folks, when they were struggling with PC's - nowdays standard in the industry. Regards. Alex

We've tried to run trial version of Dreamweaver using CrossOver Office (biult on wine). Unfortunately, Dreamweaver was crashing all the time, especially when we tried to save an HTML test page. That is why we're looking for web development applications natural to Linux. Regards. Alex

Because hand-coding isn't always the right choice. -- Scott Jones (scott at exti dot net)
