[SuSE Linux] SAX configuration of XFree86
Why is it that this program can't be used without a mouse? I mean sometimes (after recompiling kernel) strange thins happens and my mouse won't work:( Sometimes I just have to run SAX and use the old configuration (from a backup) and it works. Other times it doesn't, and then SAX is hell, because (to my knowledge) I can't use the keyboard on the confirmation dialog after hitting exit! While on the subject, why is it that my mouse seems to disappear? -- Paul Kenneth Egell-Johnsen Sales Support and System Development Metaphor Systems as -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
What you are describing is classic symptoms of an irq conflict. Do 'cat/proc/interrupts' while things are running fine and write down what it shows you. Then, when things seem funny, do that command again and compare the results. Paul Kenneth Egell-Johnsen wrote:

I'll do that on the working setup I have. I'll see what happens on the nonworking setup, but read below for more info about that. (I'm very pleased with myself for not wading into an upgrade without a prober backup;)

That's not easy to do because I still don't know how to navigate in X (or KDE) without a mouse, so it is useless to do anything inside the windowing environment when the mouse isn't working. And if the windowing environment isn't up, I don't use mouse support, which then won't let me use the commands you describe. A catch 22.

How would I remove all hardware using IRQs, or rather the setup for those. I probably need to uninstall my network card, my SB AWE, TeleS ISDN 16.3c. Only the network card is working properly at the moment anyway. Could an extra SB Live! card give some problems (with regards to the SB AWE)? If I could get _ANY_ windows to install on my computer I could have taken a note of the data for the cards there, but alas, I can't get any installation program to finish on my system. (ASUS P2B-DS, Dual P-II 400, some fairly standard cards (extra scsi controller, the two SB cards, the TeleS, the network card 3com 3c905 IIRC). At the moment there are lots of hardware in there which I can't utilise because I haven't had the time/luck to get an OS up which will use it. (I need NT so that I can use my SB Live! on both processors, I can't get NT 4 up, only NT 5 beta 2, but it doesn't recognise the drivers I have for the TeleS card.) Bleeding edge...

You have TWO sound cards plugged into your computer? !!! They may be hogging most of the available irq's.... Choose one, remove the other. Each periperhal card (sound, net, etc.) will have one or more 'default' irs's and base addresses. Write them down on a sheet of paper and compare them to see which ones are attempting to use the same irq - base address. Assign each card to a unique set of irqs and base addresses. Reset any card jumpers to match your assignments, if possible. Scsi cards also need port settings to be unique.

NT 5 beta 2, eh? Talk about working in dreamland... Say, while your are at it, I have the Calculus III textbook that you can use do do some introductory diffi-q stuff. What? You haven't studied Calculus I and II? (get my point?)
Bleeding edge...

Well, I want a soundcard to work with under linux. The SB Live! card doesn't have a driver (yet). I need the SB Live! under NT 4 so that I can connect some DAT gear to the computer. Very important for me. It also helps while playing back some large compositions;) Ah, and I have a large 18GB harddisk which is supposed to be my mastering HD for a CD, thus I need the digital i/o on the SB Live card.
Each periperhal card (sound, net, etc.) will have one or more 'default' irs's and base addresses.
It worked under Win98 (except for the ISDN card, which was a RAS, CAPI or something problem) so I assume it would be possible to make it work under linux. The Rom is PnP and recognizes my two scsi controllers (one on the MB), it recognizes the SB AWE 64, and the network card. I haven't dared turning on IDE yet, because it makes it impossible to install anything under windows, but windows works with them after install...

I assume I'll need to find manuals for everything (I doubt my ISDN card's manual is nearby), take a note of all that. Then physically work on the cards to do the rest. Well I assume (as I noted above) that none of these cards have default settings which overlap, since they worked under Win98.
Scsi cards also need port settings to be unique.
No problem there, I think, since everything boots and comes up.

Mmmm, you mean get 98 or NT 4 up? Well, I had 98 up, had to erase it for the normal reasons one erase 98. (something fucked up my boot partition majorly, later I learned that it was lilo which didn't like IDE turned on when configuring.) I've tried to install NT 4 three times, from three different sets, not possible, the setup program will always crash during setup. NT 5 beta 2 works without problems, until I try to install my ISDN card. The stupid setup program on the CD Rom crashes. I'm hoping for an NT 5 beta 3 trial, it might have the ISDN problem fixed.
