Re: [SuSE Linux] Re: [SuSE 6.0 and SuSe 5.3] Upgrades v. full versions???
Could anyone from SuSe advise me (and probably hundreds of other users in the UK) about upgrading versus buying the complete version of SuSe 6.0 at the end of Jan 1999? I have just bought a brand new machine with nothing on it but with, naturally enough, things like a Matrox Productiva G100 card and a UDMA hard drive that are not particularly well supported by older versions of the kernal. I have the cover CD of PC Plus which featured a 'cut down' version of 5.3. Should I :- a) install 5.3 from this single cut down CD and then buy an upgrade version of SuSe 6.0? b) buy and install a complete (ie 5 CD) version of 5.3 and then upgrade as in (a)? c) wait until 6.0 becomes available and buy the full (ie non-upgrade) version at the end of Jan? It would be particularly galling for me to have to take (c) as the safest 'sensible' option, as I want to start using my beautiful new machine a.s.a.p... :-) Many thanks Kester Clegg York, UK. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

You can only purchase the CD for the upgrade price, if you already own a full package. Even though it is technically possible to upgrade the single-CD base-system, you will need to pay the full price, if you are not a registered customer. The package itself is the same; it's just a different pricing scheme.

Well, if you want to start ASAP, go for Option b). An upgrade to 6.0 will (hopefully) work without serious trouble, your mileage may vary. heck, just throw that cd you've got on now, and buy the 5 cd set when 6.0 comes out... if nothing else, it'll give youa feel for the os. if you've got a good, fast net connection, you might try ftping everything, but i think that the suse distribution is very reasonably priced...chances are, you'll end up installing more than once, anyway....may as well get used to it. ;) the book is well worth the money too, in my opinion. -derek "Winter's hateful battle raging on, Rocket's flying towards the glowing sun, Pollution fills the land, the air, and sea, Man prepares to meet his destiny...." I must respectfully take issue with the "installing more than once" statement. One of the most powerful aspects of Linux is the fact that things CAN be fixed. If the fix takes longer than a reinstall, well you've actually learned something and that knoweledge can be redistributed to help others. My advice, after 10 years experience with Unix, is to leave the reinstall and reboot philosophy in the trashheap with your Microsoft CDs whence they arose. -- yours, Andy - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

well, all i can say is from experience. it took me three installs to get my system running well when i first tried to put it on. the first time i installed it, i was just messing around trying to find out how difficult it would be. as it turned out, it wasn't difficult at all, and i ended up with a running system before i knew it. the partitioning wasn't good, though, so i wanted to give it another shot. the second, i must have screwed up something during the installation, and without knowing which critical applications i'd left out, i decided to just reinstall...seemed alot easier than trying to figure out what i'd done wrong... the third time was the charm, however, and it ran great until i decided to try out another couple of versions of linux that i got ahold of...suse is back on the machine. on my second machine, which i waited a couple of months to intall on, i only needed one install...but i think that's because i took the time to fiddle with my system on the other machine. once you've got a system up and running, and have some idea of what you are looking for, then yes, i can understand your point. but if you've no idea what you are even shooting for, then i think you have to _plan_ to reinstall at some point. if the original poster has some idea of what he's shooting for, or has a friend that can help, then yes, he may well only requre one install. but for the inexperienced folks who are just taking the leap on their own, i think they'd better expect to experiment a little before they are going to be satisfied. this isn't a drawback, nor do i think it's a mindset generated by microsoft indoctrination. i think it's just a matter of 'learning by doing.' besides, it's not as if installation is a big deal...suse has done a great job at making it easy to install linux. -derek "Winter's hateful battle raging on, Rocket's flying towards the glowing sun, Pollution fills the land, the air, and sea, Man prepares to meet his destiny...." Love that one!!! Unfortunately, that is the often the only fix with that "configure everything at boot and don't document anything" OS. Seriously, the "install more than once" is not a bad idea. I had a problem with RedHat, so I tried different distributions. Fortunately, I had all my data on a separate partition, and since they were all Linux, all my settings stayed the same from distro to distro. This exemplifies the power of Linux. Also, my philosophy is you learn best when you know how it is supposed to work, then it breaks, rather than suffering the frustration of having to read hundreds of pages of stuff you don't yet understand trying to get it to work right the first time. Get used to the OS, and when you break something, at least you know that it did work right at one time, and it can be made to work right again. As a newbie, I needed it to work so I could tinker. I wouldn't dare think to rebuild an engine from a pile of parts in a box, but it I take it apart, I can put it back together. Isn't the PC Plus CD a single disk version of 5.2?

Well, the "upgrade-version" and the full version are identical, it's just that you get a discount on the purchase price of a new version if you have previously bought and registered a full disk set of SuSE, so... Unless PC Plus are doing a special deal with SuSE, you won't be eligible for an upgrade price on 6.0 as a result of having the PC Plus CD, although you should be able to physically upgrade your system from the 6.0 install, rather than having to wipe it and start again. If you're a first time user I'd recommend buying the full disk set and manual from SuSE or a local distributor [1]. The manual is worth its weight in gold if you're not absolutely sure what you are doing, or you hit a problem, and you'll get more software than you know what to do with included in the disk set :) So I would either install the PC Plus version now and buy the full 6.0 disk set in January, or buy 5.3 now and buy 6.0 at the discount price later. [1] I know the manual is included on the PC Plus disk, but I always find online manuals difficult, and no substitute for a hard copy, especially when you're trying to sort out problems in front of your machine.
