[opensuse] cannot connect to WLAN
Hello, I have a weird problem with my WLAN - everything seems to work but I cannot connect via WLAN to the Zyxel adsl modem/router anymore. I am here in Barcelona/Spain and the telephone company telefonica supports only... well... First (yesterday) everything was fine. Using KnetworkManager it just connected wireless. Several times, also after reboots. Today I didn see the WLAN of my modem anymore in the list of KNetworkManager. So I called telefonica and they said, there might be too many users with the same channel. So using a cable ethernet connection and via Web-Interface of the Zyxel modem I changed the wlan-modem settings to another channel. Now I can see the WLAN again, but I cannot connect. I know I have the right password (it's printed on the modem and I doublechecked several times). I see some other unsecured WLAN's here without a key, but I also cannot connect to them. I also tried to disable KNetworkManager, changed in Yast to "use ifup", then tried with KInternet: same result. Where can I search in my system to find out why it doesn't want to work anymore? Are there any specific logs or log entries somewhere that could help? thanks for hints. Hey Daniel, And your config to dns and gateway? Are ok? Please print here the results of 2 commands: "cat /etc/resolv.conf" and AFTER "route -n" Cheers. On Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:30 AM, Daniel Bauer <linux@daniel-bauer.com> wrote:

This bug seems to plague Ubuntu as well. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/139966/commen... There are hints in the above post that suggest the problem was related to these lines in your log: Jun 3 16:26:30 baer NetworkManager: <info> Error opening supplicant global control interface. Jun 3 16:26:30 baer NetworkManager: <WARN> real_act_stage2_config(): Activation (eth1/wireless): couldn't connect to the supplicant. Those indicate a problem with the wpa_supplicant module. You might force a reload of that and then try a rcnetwork restart. Then you could have a look here: http://www.adslzone.net/adsl.html http://www.adslayuda.com/ they have help for probably all kinds of adsl modem/routers used in Spain. If you don't see a search box, simply look on the lef bar of both sites for Zyxel, they both have several models.
Now I can see the WLAN again, but I cannot connect. I know I have the right password (it's printed on the modem and I doublechecked several times).
You would do well to change that printed password. Everybody here knows that "1234" password they always use, and it is the first thing crackers try. And if you mean the wep whatever password... yeah, that one too. Some people would recomend resetting your router to factory defaults, and reconfigure. Usually they can load the configuration from a file on your PC. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. No, I don't think so. The "support personnel" are just "floreros", ie, flower pots. They know very little and they are paid very little. They just follow the book. They know a bit about computers, which simply means they know a bit of windows. Actually, the technicians inside do use unix and linux, and windows, and many other specialized things. I know, I have been inside. My router, which is a Telefonica supplied router, runs linux...

I had the same problem with Earthlink a few years ago. And ultimately it was because the modem was dead and the lights on the front panel indicated that. Oh, and that was after selecting the "I have an OS other than Mac or Windows" option in their phone menu - didn't make a difference, I ended up talking to someone who was only authorized to support Windows (even though he knows Linux quite well, I found out). And guess what: the supporter asked me to open Internet-Exploder, connect via cable to the modem-router and tell him what was written on the screen.... That was all! Just open a browser! Did you tell the "support" person that he or she is a complete idiot? I would have.

I had this problem with ticali in the uk. Their support is totally windoze application orientated. I had appalling net speeds. I didn't get anywhere with them but eventually sent them a line speed test result and they passed me onto some "engineers". Had to pay £0.50 per min to talk to one. Told him what I was running and he said that they didn't know if their system would work with it. I explained that internet protocols are standardised and well documented etc. He found that acceptable and reported that my line was congested and I was re hooked up at the exchange. You could try that approach if the same sort of service is provided what ever your problem is. :) Things did improve but were still slow. Turned out to be an ipv6 problem. Things improved dramatically after disabling that everywhere but dns still seems slow. Seems that some enterprising trackers some where had found a way of fooling the auto dns server detection in my router. That cured that problem until some time later I found that the server I entered had been changed - not by me. New router needed. Recently I found that I get server not found errors that go away if I hit refresh. Oh no I thought but that's been fixed by a router firmware upgrade. Do you really think that insulting the employee will help you solve any problem? Rather, he (you) would be put on a black list. When ever he calls again the note "jerk" would show up and all employees attending him for ever after would have that in mind when answering him (you). Yes, very helpful. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. And then you ask for someone with a clue. And if they can't find someone with a clue, you're switching ISPs. It's all very simple -- it comes down to money -- if they fail to provide competent support, you stop giving it to them, and give it to someone else. But FIRST, you, you give them a chance to prove that they are worthy of continuing to give them your money before cutting them off. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good luck, then. :-P We are not talking about ISPs in the USA. You go find one that has really good technical support in this country and I might change. No, migrating to the USA to get one is not an option. And in any case, insulting them on the phone will not get you any better help. With some of them, they insult you back, phone you back and call you names. Some don't even have local tech support, they hire a company on another continent to have even cheaper "tech support". So yes, go insult them, or try another suplier... good luck. Enough said! - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
