Furthermore it seems a subliminal propaganda campaign in favour of PNC! Wonder why somebody wish to configure the auto-responder to spread out automatic replies without limiting it to just sending toward business recipients! ...completely nonsense -- Marco Calistri <amdturion> An infallible method of conciliating a tiger is to allow oneself to be devoured. -- Konrad Adenauer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Probably because the auto-responder sends a reply to the sender, not the list-address. Not unusual at all. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (24.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

SO, auto-responders sends out emails "blindly" to unsolicited persons that NEVER sent it an email. -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding Reed Organ Society Member Florissant, MO 63034 (314) 838-5587 dahechler@att.net www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com -- Home & Business user of Linux - 10 years -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But you do send it an email, every time you post to the list. Look at the emails. They are sent with the author as sender, not the mailing list Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anders Ok, I'll buy that but I am a bit curious about why no one has said anything about Richard's name not ever appearing in this list. Of course I may have dropped a few messages over the years but I have been this list for 10 years. I don't find his name in an messages and when I google that name, I find first ones are from this list and then various listings elsewhere. I find it a little hard to believe this is just an auto responder. Of course I could be wrong but I tend to be suspicious of names that suddenly appear and they have something out of the ordinary to say.

He doesn't need to post to *receive* the list mail. Many read w/o much comment. It simply means he is a "lurker". His email receives list email, he never sent emails to the list, at least from that address. It could be that he did not personally subscribe. Somebody installed linux for him, subscribed him... see how nice this linux thing is? Then he forgets for ten years. What are this lot of emails about linux, how am I getting those? Ok, off to the spam folder :-P You can imagine hundreds of working scenarios. But there is nothing fishy here, except that he set a dumb autoresponder. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Think: the list doesn't set the "reply-to:" header, nor does it change the "from:" header (for a reason). Thus, 1) you send an email to the list, 2) the list sends a copy to Richard (and every body else) 3) Richard's server or desktop sends _you_ (the address in the "from:" field) an autovacation response and 4) you get pissed ;-) If the list were changing those fields mentioned above, then everytime somebody sent an email to the list, then everybody would be getting a copy of the vacation messsage, because step 3) above would be "sends to the list a vacation email", followed by 4) the list sends a copy to every lister, and 5) every body gets very pissed. The advantage is obvious: only you gets pissed compared to everybody getting pissed >:-p There are several faults here. One, Richard should not set his autovacation program on an email that is subscribed to a mail list. His fault. Then, the programmers of whatever program he is using neglected to add checks for list email (List-*: headers). After all, software should cater for our needs automatically.... And finally, someone could forward that vacation message to the list owner so that he is unsubscribed and gets a chance to correct those faults for the next time >:-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E.
