Sometimes (just after turning on my computer) when I try to use xmms to hear some mp3s I got that the program is unable to load the plug-in and that I should check if there was an appropriate plug in installed and bla bla.. Result: I can not hear anything. It doesn't matter what I try on this session I got this error. Most of the times after login in/out everything works fine again. Has anyone experienced this? What is the reason? or how can I diagnose this strange problem?
If KDE then disable aRts on startup in KDE Control Center. When it is running in the background, the sound card resources are in use, so xmms is not able to to use the sound device. Cheers On Saturday 13 December 2003 16:52, Felipe Leon wrote:

Felipe, Are you using a motherboard with built in sound/audio? If so, that is part of the problem. The built-in audio does not seem to be able to handle more than one source at time with xmms. I think I am describing that correctly. I have noticed it also with the built in sound AC97 stuff. The best cure, get yourself an inexpensive sound card. You will be happier, your computer will be happy. Lee -- --- KMail v1.5.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

No, the best cure is to use arts (Contrary to what Bandipat posted in the message before this one). Arts with the xmms-arts plugin (which suse 8.2 and greater installs automatically) allows you to multiplex older inexpensive sound cards and EVERYTHING works at the same time. Running away from a software sound multiplexer is not the answer. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Well, I agree and disagree John, a cure is to use arts sure, that's the reason xmms has several output plugins to choose from, but I still contend, the "best cure" is to get a good sound card. If it's a laptop, you make do, but for a desktop, separate graphics and sound cards are the better solutions. Well, IMHO both BandiPat and John have a point. You should really try to get things to work with arts if possible, especially if you can multiplex your soundcard. However, onboard devices such as video and sound have their limits in many ways when compared to a dedicated PCI card. It's usually, from my experience, that I get better quality, stablity, and generally a "cleaner" running setup if I use PCI cards over built-ins. I've seen soundblaster 512's for as little as $20 U.S. And there are decent 16 bit sound cards for less - though I don't know about Germany (I assume your there by the *.de email tag :] ) but in the U.S. 16 bit cards are everywhere. Try to run Xmms from the console and post the output you get to the list and let's see what we see! Cheers, Curtis.

I have a Creative 512 in use. Works great! The card is listed as an SB Live!, using the EMU10k1 driver. Back to the original problem - xmms will not even start! It was working fine, now it's not even starting up. It's a wine/winex problem, yet I get sound on all my apps, including all apps using wine/winex. I installed winex via cvs, and wine off the 9.0 cd's. xmms is the only thing that is suffering. I have uninstalled the xmms plugins via yast, but that didn't make a difference. I did already post the output, but here it is again: bernd@linux:~> xmms /usr/lib/xmms/General/ntdll.dll.so: undefined symbol: wine_pthread_init_thread /usr/lib/xmms/General/libntdll.dll.so: undefined symbol: wine_pthread_init_thread Inconsistency detected by ld.so: ../sysdeps/generic/dl-tls.c: 72: _dl_next_tls_modid: Assertion `result <= _rtld_local._dl_tls_max_dtv_idx' failed! bernd@linux:~> MTIA Bernd -- "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Ok, go into your home dir and do a "mv .xmms xmms-bkup" and then restart xmms. If you get it up and running you can into the xmms-bkup dir and look at the config files. Also, just an FYI. It's a good practice to open up the konsole/xterm and run the program command from there. Then you can post the output so others can look at what's it's doing/telling you. Cheers, Curtis.

Did already. No change in the output from the konsole.

Curtis, I looked through the mess and couldn't find anything appropriate. I apologize for not trying this earlier: Marcus suggested that I dump the 2 files. That scared me a bit, because he said it should -probably- work! I never received a response back to my query about the "probably", so I didn't do it! Well he "probably" didn't respond back because he was waiting for me to try it. I just tagged them as *.old so I wouldn't lose them, and it DID work!!! Sorry Marcus! I should have known that your "probably's" are considerably different from mine!!! Thanks everyone!!! Have you upgraded/changed the version of the Xmms packages? What version are you running, and if you upgraded/installed what for was it and where did you get it? The reason I asked is if you did so via tarballs then you may have needed to use a particular flag/s to set parameters or pointers to dirs, libs, dev, and/or aliases etc. Cheers, Curtis.
