kernel update!!!?!?
Hi, ' Normally, i have no problem with kernel updates and re installing my nvidia driver, but this time is quite the problem. i have "wget" the latest nvidia driver, init 3, but when i go to sh install it, i keep getting an xserver is running. i checked tty1-8 and the only one that has anything resembling an xserver is 7. but you cannot kill it!!!! it is a blue screen, and says "the x server is now disabled" (which would mean to the average person, that there is no xserver running, correct?) restart gdm when it is configured correctly. then it has an <ok> below that, you cannot click ok, and you also cannot <ctrl> <alt> <bksp> that doesnt work. is there a way to init 3 all 7 at the same time from wherever you are logged in? there is a cursor blinking further down the screen, but you cannot move it up to the <ok>........any clues as to where i can go next? thank you steve --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Never seen that.

If you have changed your display manager (gdm, wdm, xdm) while X is running, the old display manager is not killed. I mean, it trys to kill kdm while you have gdm running, for instance. It has to be killed manually ("ps afx| less", etc.). You can also reboot into level 3, typing a "3" at the grub prompt. The change is for that session only. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I got this too. If you look at your nvidia log file, you will find that the "x server is running issue" is because you still have an X lock file present in your /tmp directory. try something like: telinit 3 rm -rf /tmp/.X* before installing the nvidia driver. mike. thanks all for your help.
i wound up editing /etc/inettab/ and changing the default runlevel from 5 to 3.
rebooted, and the nvidia driver installed perfectly, as no xserver even thought of starting up.
