can't mount CD with SuSE 8.0

Hi All, Just installed 8.0. on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop, and it has recognized my IDE CDRW, which is good, since 7.3 was unable to, but when I click on the CD icon on the KDE desktop, I get the error message: Could not mount device. The reported error was: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem and none was specified. One difference from the 7.3 install is, this time, instead of only one icon appearing on the KDE, there are two icons appearing on the Desktop for the same drive. In addition to the aforementioned CD ROM icon, there is also an icon labelled: CD-R. When I click on this one, I get the same message, only instead of reporting the error as /dev/cdrom: input/output, it reports it as /dev/cdrecorder: Input/output. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I am a beginner, so if you can help, overexplaining will not be possible. thank you Neal McDermott

Sorry to jump into this thread in the middle. SuSE 8.0 set up the link incorrectly since you have an IDE CD-RW. The link should be to /dev/sr0. You can fix it, as root, with: rm /dev/cdrom ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom I just had to do the same with mine. Also, if you want to burn CDs as a user instead of root, go ahead and make it world writable... chmod a+rw /dev/sr0 And, if you want to rip CDs using grip, do this too... chmod a+rw /dev/sg0 Best Regards, Keith

Actually, that would not work on a default 8.0 since the group disk only has read access, not write access. If you are really worried about security, a better solution would be to add the user to the disk group AND give the disk group write access to /dev/sr0. It is good you notice the details, Togan. Hi Keith, I did exactly what you advised, just the first part, but when I click on the desktop icons, I still get the same error messages: When I click on the CD R icon, I get the message: Could not mount device. Reported error was: /dev/cdrecorder: input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified. When I click on the CD ROM icon, I get the message: Could not mount device. Reported error was: /dev/cdrom: input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified. Any ideas? Neal, What program did you use to burn that CD? Do other CDs work besides that one, for example, can you mount one of the SuSE install CDs? Here is what is in my /etc/fstab, please compare to yours... /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 Here are my links for thos two device, please compare to yours... 19:07:00 $ l /dev/cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Apr 23 19:41 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr0 19:04:02 $ l /dev/cdrom lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Apr 25 11:14 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0 Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Got spam? Keith, No, I was wrong, it was a music cd that still got the error messages. All other data cds work fine after following the directions you gave me, not just the Suse CD but ones I have burned on CDR and CDRW disks as well. When I read the question from Anders about what sort of disk was in the drive, I tried some other CDs and all but the music CDs worked fine. This I can live with. By the way, this is a single user machine, so your advice about letting everyone control the burner works for me too. Thanks again to all who responded. I can feel that Windows partition shrinking everytime I learn something from this list. Neal Oh, one last question. When an issue is solved like this, can I just append the word solved to the subject line, or is that starting a new thread? On Thursday 25 April 2002 16:08, Keith Winston wrote:

I'm afraid you'll have to. Mounting music CDs has never worked. They don't have file systems on them.

No, that's what appears to be the trend so that's what you should do. Anders

Okay, so this was the problem: Just installed 8.0. on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop, and it has recognized my IDE CDRW, which is good, since 7.3 was unable to, but when I click on the CD icon on the KDE desktop, I get the error message: Could not mount device. When I click on this one, I get the same message, only instead of reporting the error as /dev/cdrom: input/output, it reports it as /dev/cdrecorder: Input/output. And this was the response from Keith Winston. SuSE 8.0 set up the link incorrectly since you have an IDE CD-RW. The
link should be to /dev/sr0. You can fix it, as root, with:
rm /dev/cdrom ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
I just had to do the same with mine. Also, if you want to burn CDs as a user instead of root, go ahead and make it world writable...
chmod a+rw /dev/sr0
And, if you want to rip CDs using grip, do this too...
chmod a+rw /dev/sg0
So that fixed the problem, but didn't know it yet because I still could not click on the CD icons on the desktop and see the contents of the disk. The next response came from Anders Johansson who asked what sort of disk I was trying to open. It turned out to be a music disk, which he informed me cannot be mounted because it has no filesystem. So I tried other CDs, both the setup CDs from SuSE and data CDRs and CDRWs that I had made myself, and they all worked. Thanks again to all who responded. Neal

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this just listing the device? What is needed is to say: ls -l /mnt/cdrom or similar, depending on where the device is MOUNTED? JST
