gnomesu worked !! As far as running as root. I'm running Oracle's version. Even the start menu icon will not start. Me too had some problems, i missed the vboxdrv that i cannot find in anyway, however I solved in this way: Istalled only version 3.2.8 directly froms here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads added, as said before, my user to vboxusers, added this 3 packages with all their dependecies: gcc, kernel-source and make. afterwards from konsole as root type: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup wait and see: Stopping VirtualBox kernel module done Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module done Starting VirtualBox kernel module done restart virtual box and see if it works! Good luck!!! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For those wondering... if you've installed VBox from the VBox website, then the vboxdrv is executed as part of the install (assuming you have gcc, make, kernel sources already available). If/when you update your kernel, you will need to rebuild the VBox kernel modules. As root: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup and it'll rebuild the bits it needs. You will notified/reminded of this when you try to launch VBox after a kernel upgrade (including the location of vboxdrv) and you have not rebuilt the kernel modules. Running as root is definitely NOT necessary nor desirable.
From the user manual at: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch02.html#id2649623 "The group vboxusers will be created during installation. Note that a user who is going to run VirtualBox must be member of that group."
So add your user to that vboxusers group (easy with YAST, if you don't want to do it on command line), log out, log in and VBox will work as you expect and want it to - eg from a desktop icon. Thank you all. I must have missed that the last time I upgraded. I knew I had it running as non-root before but I couldn't put my figure on why and what I did to make it so. I've added this step to my "tickle" file for the next time this happens. By the way, besides downloading directly from the Oracle site, Oracle also maintains a repository, here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/opensuse/11.3/ This is the same "proprietary" version (the OSE version is in the SuSE repo). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All of the previous BS in this thread (except vboxuser group and compiling the driver as root) is unnecessary. You can run virtualbox as an ordinary user if you set it up _properly_. I have done the install, built the driver as root, added my user to the vboxuser group and it does not start from my user, but will if I start from a root terminal, not sure what is wrong. I did the same thing on my last system (11.1) and it worked fine. opensuse 11.3, all updates, installed needed packages for driver compile. mike. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok, did that and found it did not show me added. I had restarted the computer after adding for another reason and my account auto logs on. I still needed to log out and back on, weird as I thought that the restart would have covered that, guess not. I am all set now, thanks all.

Well, after getting VirtualBox running, I logged back out and was going to check operation on another user and could not log back into the system. Then up popped a message that my /tmp was full (??), had to drop to RL3 and delete some files, then tried to move some lib files to another open partition and CRASH. Oh well I am back running and I'll do Vbox again.. Me and Electronics are not getting along today.
