The first question is how do I get kmail to rescan its folders. The kmail icon shows a few unread messages, but going to the next unread message does not work which would indicate to me that ether there are some unread messages, but the folder navigation does not detect them, or that there are no unread messages, and the icon is displaying a bogus number. The other question is that clicking on a URL is intermittent at best. A coworker is having the same problem and says a reboot solved the problem. The only time I've seen this happen is when I have a filter active and the new messages are filtered out. The count of unread messages is non-zero and you can hit space or N or + all you want, it just sits there happily showing you the same filtered message. Could that be what you're seeing?

I don't recall ever having that problem, but I have noticed that regardless of what kind of URL or what kind of resource it resolves to, KMail wants to fetch at least the beginning of the stream and then dispatch to the appropriate handler accordingly (e.g., images are sent to your image viewer and text files are displayed in a text editor; HTML is sent to your default browser, of course). This means that a slow responding server can tie things up. Do you see the "Loading Progress" dialog in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen? If so, it's just waiting for the server to respond. If not, it's something else.

Could that be what you're seeing? I certainly do have messages filtered into folders, and some SPAMS deleted. I did find an anomaly this morning as we had a power failure last night. As I was booting the system this morning, KDE complained that I had another instance of Kmail running. (Which was probably a lockfile that got left around). I think the problem occurred after I deleted a number of messages that I had

That's not what I mean. I'm talking about the "Search:" text field and the "Status:" pop-up at the top of the list of messages in the currently displayed folder.

I have had this problem a couple of times due to crashes or lockups that I caused. The only way I found to find the new unknown mail was to click on each folder until the I found each mail. Restarting kmail did not work, nor anything else I tried although I didn't try deleting the indexes ( which was more work than the above). -- Regards, Graham Smith

Yep, that doesn't work. As I said the only way I found the missing emails was to click on each folder until I found them all. I have been using this method for a long time now ( Since KDE 3.0 I think). It doesn't take long but is frustrating. I was referring to KDE 3.0 upwards, at the moment I'm running SuSE 9.3 (KDE 3.4) and it only occurs when I cause the lockup because of some experimental software I'm testing or mis-configure something. I've never had Kmail crash on me. I initially was only explaining how to find hidden new email messages which don't appear in the folders. -- Regards, Graham Smith

It also appears that I am unable to get Konqueror to go to any web site, but I have to do some research on that. -- Jerry Feldman <gerald.feldman@hp.com> Partner Technology Access Center (contractor) (PTAC-MA) Hewlett-Packard Co. 550 King Street LKG2a-X2 Littleton, Ma. 01460 (978)506-5243
