[opensuse] Cannot boot from CD/DVD
I'm currently running OpenSuSE 12.3 and would like to update to 13.2. I've downloaded the iso for 13.2 and burned to a DVD. When I try to boot form the DVD the computer stalls at the "Booting from CD/DVD:" for a few minutes and then boots from the HD. Please let me know if anyone has seen this problem before. I have no idea why I cannot boot from the DVD. Any suggestions on how to move forward? Thanks Terry -- OpenSuSE 12.3 -- Kernel 3.7.10-1.16-desktop --- 12:30PM --- Sun 02/22/15 There are 10 types of people, those who know binary and those who don't -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you create the DVD from the ISO file? Or just copy it to the DVD? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I highlighted the iso image in Dolphin and selected burn to DVD (K3b). I'll have to go back and see what options are offered in K3b. You can burn the iso to DVD straight from the command line with growisofs: growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=/path/to/image.iso It sounds like your original attempt with dolphin produced a coaster... -- David C. The proper way to use K3b is open the K3b program, and then find the file and input it. K3b will recognize it as an .iso file and treat it accordingly. --doug

I burnt iso files both ways. Turns out the DVD does boot on another computer so there is something wrong with my CD/DVD drive of the system. Checking out a different DVD drive. Regards

First use a cleaning disk, if you didn't already. Then check the cable. It's cheaper than a drive and easier to change. If the cable is red, it may be easier just to buy another. A particular magenta red dye used for some cables causes them to corrode internally and fail. e.g. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2012-December/265771.html -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Will try this before buying a new DVD driver Regards

Also, did you verify the download with MD5? If not, how do you know it's good? You can still do it. Go to the site where you downloaded the software, and there should be an MD5 code shown. It's along series of letters and numbers. Copy that with ctrl-c to and editor. Then run "md5sum downloadfilename" without the quotes, and see if it agrees with the code you saved. If not, you need to download again. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

--doug Yes, the letters/numbers matched. Thanks for the reply.

Is there some other PC available to try it in? If yes but fails there too, or if not, try burning again: 1-verify good iso download with md5sum 2-burn at 8X or slower instead of 16X on +/-R, less than 4X on +/-RW 3-burn to quality media http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm 4-burn iso, not copy iso to DVD Alternatively, burn to and boot from USB stick. Another option is upgrading using zypper dup, first to 13.1, then again to 13.2. Do this without X running (boot with 3 added to Grub cmdline). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Looks like that answer is a qualified yes, using an appropriate copy tool (e.g. dd): https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
