My system reboots at random times, averaging two to six reboots in a 24 hour period. I am running a dual boot system (SuSE Linux 7.3, 2.4.10-4GB kernel and Windows XP) with 1 CPU (1.6 GHz Pentium 4), 256 MB RAM, plenty of disk space. Actions taken: I have installed a new UPS, no change. I can reboot under Windows and no reboots occur. Originally running a default kernel, I rebuilt the kernel, omitting all Watch Dog elements. There are no crons defined. The messages file looks clean... no errors prior to reboot. 'Sar' output and captured 'top' output does not seem to indicate a resource problem, although, available memory does get down to the 3-4 MB range prior to some, but not all, of the reboots. Question: What additional files/logs are available to help diagnose the cause? Are there additional actions which can be taken to identify / eliminate the problem? Thanks, for all suggestions. Hi Jim,

Maybe this will help: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wessels_noapic.html Other than that I don't know.
Hi, You can try to test your memory with memtest86 (on SuSE 1st CD or DVD, or download latest version (3.0) from memtest86.com.) These unwanted reboots are often sign of memory prob's, even if they're not detected by Win$ -- Yves Baudrier Linux registered user # 182046

Thanks to all who have responded so far. Actions: I have eliminated references to APIC. Checked the BIOS to make sure that there is no setting causing the system to reboot if the CPU gets hot. Downloaded and run memtest86 v3.0, no errors reported after 3 runs (v2.7 reported errors and even crashed, but I don't think that version knew how to handle a Pentium 4). The system still reboots without warning. I have exhausted my ability to diagnose this problem. is the power supply pentium4 compatible, basically anything over 300watts? Ewan On Sat, 2002-08-03 at 05:03, Jim Goode wrote:
