I just obtained a new system that I can use for experients, and as I have a copy of suse-8.0 laying around on my harddisk I decided to have that version installed on the new system. So I did: - copy the suse-8.0 files from my "production" system to my new system (using knoppix to create the partition and for the ssh server). - dd'ed the bootdisk and modules1 images to 2 floppy disks. - inserted the the floppy disks into the new system - pointed yast to the partition that holds the copy of suse-8.o (/dev/hdb2) - configured the installation (language, timezone, partitions end such) - selected "continue" - yast creates the required partitions but at this point I get the following error; could not mount the source medium, because it is already mounted. it is indeed mounted on /var/adm/mount and /tmp/extras Anyone know how to deal with this?? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
Let me ask it differently: Did anyone install SuSE-8.0 succesfully from harddisk? Op zondag 29 december 2002 12:40, schreef Richard Bos:

Installing SuSE 8.0 (and 7.3, so I have no reason to believe that 8.1 will be different) from Hard Disk is how I do all my workstations - from the hard drive on the server. When I rebuilt the server recently, the old /home dir was on /dev/hdg, so I just used the files on that and didn't format it - then I swapped that drive into the filesystem later. Full instructions can be found at the SuSE website - do a keyword search on "hard drive" Jon => -----Original Message----- => From: Carlos E. R. That's the strange thing about it. Installing it from an nfs mounted partition it works, but from a local mounted partition it won't!

On my server I have; /install /install/suse /install/suse/a1 Etc.... In the /install directory, you have to have a copy of the hidden ".S.u.S.E-disk-00*" file, or the install program can't find anything. Jon

That's what I heard; I only tried once and I failed as well. I think it has to be on different hard disk. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

That's what I heard; I only tried once and I failed as well. I think it has to be on different hard disk. Tell you what, try the following upon install from a local harddisk, and it comes up with the medium busy: Change to a new console, and "umount /dev/hdx1" Where /dev/hdx1 is the partition with the install on it :o)
Works for me - you see SuSE put the partition in the fstab under /data2 and automagically mounted it upon boot, which caused issues when it tried to mount it under /var/adm/mount [or wherever] too :o) Hope this helps, not been following the thread so please excuse me if I have suggested something that has already been said! Take care, Jon
