I was trying to find a Suse packaged version of Java 1.2 or 1.3 at their site but I wasn't able to find anything ... I could be me? Does such a package exist or is it the one at blackdown that I should install? jem -- Jan Erik Moström mailto:jem@mostrom.pp.se Free Elektron http://www.mostrom.pp.se/folk/jem/
Go to the sun java sight and download the 1.3 version. there is a gziped NON rmp version , unzip and untat it and run the install script. then edit your path , and away you go. I did this on a 6.4 box and it works just fine , have not gotten to it on 7.0 as I have just done a clean install over the old 6.4 box. It ran ok an the even thofggh its anold p166 with only 64 meg ram. At 03:35 PM 1/6/2001 +0100, Jan Erik Moström wrote:

Sun Java 1.3 is RedHat oriented <sigh> and does not work on SuSE 7.0 due to some missing/different STL library. OTH, IBM Java 1.3 works fine under SuSE 7.0. -Kastus

Thanks , I tried the gziped tar ball , as I did not trust the rmp for the suse 6.4 box. wich one did you use ? the RPM ot the gziped binary files? this could have been your problem Funny how it wont work on 7.0 when it would on 6.4 ? btw i first removed the sus4e rpms than unziped the binary file and ran it. Worked well. I hopefully will try the binary on 7.0 , as I still ahve it on the server , just emialme in a week or so amd ill let you know how it worked.

Let us know how you like it ? How does it run (speedwise) and on what hardware are you using it on ?

With 128MB RAM and a 466 processor it's almost as heavy as StarOffice 5.2! Time for me to buy some more power to this box. But it's an interesting tool, reminds me of VB 6. ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ gnu4u@linux.nu ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux & KDE ~~@

-Kastus Now I've experienced that the Sun Java 1.3 really doesn't work properly in 7.0. Is there anything special to think of when I install the IBM package?

Just --nodeps option to rpm when installing it. IBM Java requires glib which SuSE calls libc. -Kastus

You know what? I just realized that the jdk1.3 package included in my JBuilder IS the IBM JDK! ei On Friday 12 January 2001 03:13, kastus@tsoft.com wrote:

Sigh ... never talk and write at the same time (especially not in two different languages): I was trying to find a Suse packaged version of Java 1.2 or 1.3 at their site but I wasn't able to find anything ... but it could that I missed it. Hi,
I was trying to find a Suse packaged version of Java 1.2 or 1.3 at their site but I wasn't able to find anything ... but it could that I missed it.
Does a Suse packaged package exist or should I go with the one I can find at blackdown?
Whilst I am not sure about 'SuSE Packaged' versions, I began to have problems with Blackdowns version about a year or so ago. I am currently using SUN's 1.3 version, with no complaints.. Cheers Phil
