XMMS Stopped Playing MP3s
Hi, Recently xmms stopped playing MP3s on my system, which it used to handle just fine. I really only use XMMS to play pod-cast tracks downloaded by CastPodder (formerly iPodder, thank you Apple). My attempts to diagnose the problem were initially confused by the fact that a recent update to CastPodder contained a bug that causes it not to pass file name arguments on to xmms when launching it to play a track it had downloaded. When I figured that out, I tried opening audio files manually from XMMS. Only then did I realized that xmms was having problems with MP3s but not, e.g., Ogg-Vorbis files. Furthermore, a quick attempt to use various other MP3-capable players shows they're all working properly. Has anybody else encountered this symptom? If so, have you diagnosed the cause of the problem? Have you fixed it? Thanks in advance. Randall Schulz

So I'm curious which repositories you're using, 'cause between the commercial DVD, Packman and Guru's RPM, I do not have access to xmms-1.2.10-84 (likewise xmms-lib-1.2.10-84). I also note that among packages installed on all three of our systems, these are the only ones for which you're running a newer version.
Have fun!

I just saw this in ANOTHER thread:
The MP3 problem goes even deeper than that. I used official SuSE updates to update from KDE 3.4 to KDE 3.5 and it broke the KDE sound system. Artsd crashed when a system sound was attempted. This was because SuSE chose to move MP3 support out of its default KDE rpms and put it elsewhere so it could be left out of the default install. When doing the update those new rpms were NOT installed. I had to install them explicitly. I submitted a bug report to the KDE team and wasted their time on this. They were kind enough to identify the solution -- I was not the first to run into this.
For the benefit of those who are battling the problem, what are those RPMs which fixed the issue and where did you find them?

Yes, I saw that too, but I don't think it's related because I am not using the (pre-release) KDE 3.5.

So clearly this is not related to your experience of the "xmms cannot play MP3s" problem.

Look at what xmms-kde actually is: "This is a small applet to control XMMS. It docks in the KDE panel (Kicker). This package also includes an aRts output plug-in, so that XMMS can play sounds through the aRts server. " In fact, after reading Lee's mail, I did install that package. But still no MP3 play from xmms (nor would I expect that package to make a diffference, but sometimes unexpected interactions occur).

oh, I read it all, I didn't think that is what you were referring to. that thread is why I tried gnome. Failed, so I will bail if Novell drops KDE support. I just didn't chime in with a "me to" list mail.

I found 1.2.10-84 of xmms and xmms-lib in the Gnome supplementary repository. However, installing that version does not alleviate the problem with xmms' inability to play MP3s. Randall Schulz

It is probably a case of them splitting off some files that used to be in the main package and making another package, to make it possible to disable mp3 playback to make the lawyers and BSA happy, and their customers just have to work a bit harder to get their system complete. And it gets weirder. Now CastPodder has started working again. I got another clue on that front. While the problems (both the CastPodder not passing on a file name and xmms not playing MP3s) was still entirely undiagnosed, I created a shell script to intercept xmms invocations and log their command lines before passing the call on to the real xmms. There were no arguments and then xmms would display its file open dialog. I assumed this was a problem with CastPodder. But it turns out that the command line is apparently not how CastPodder tells xmms which file to play, 'cause the logged command lines are still blank, but now xmms plays the file as before. Having the intercept script pass the invocation on to amaroK instead of xmms works when I run it manually from the command line, supplying the file name myself, but not when CastPodder invokes the script. Apparently there was only one problem, the xmms problem, and it appeared to me to be two problems. Live and learn ... If you're lucky ... On both counts. Randall Schulz
