[opensuse] cups + avahi + iphone AirPrint - print to any printer from your iphone
Guys, Just dropping a note about printing to virtually any printer from your iphone/ipad. All you need is cups and avahi-daemon and a printer definition in /etc/avahi/services and it works flawlessly. Howto and example avahi printer.service file at: http://hartlessbydesign.com/blog/view/197-airprint-with-ubuntu-1010 The AirPrint enabled apps are safari, mail, photos, etc.... -- David C. I resisted the move from my old motorola 'phone' to the new 'smart phone' for as long as I could, so I'm playing catch-up on all that it can do. So far, the egroupware WebDAV integration is fantastic, the ability to use the little device as a ssh client is pretty amazing (yes vi is usable from the iphone via ssh), and it's ability to function as a ftp:// or http:// server for document transfer is also a plus. Can't wait for Cydia/Redsn0w to get IOS 4.3.5 (or 5.x) untethered. Should be quite an improvement. Only real drawbacks are lack of common filesystem space between apps, clumsy keyboard and the screen being too darn small for real browsing, etc..., but..., in a pinch it works like a charm. Now the smart open-source guys just have to come up with a Linux based development platform and things would really take off! -- David C.
