[SuSE Linux] SuSE 5.3 kernel compile for sound failed?
I've compiled a half dozen kernels for SuSE 5.2, and never had a bit of trouble getting sound. Then I did a fress install with SuSE 5.3, compiled the same 2.0.35 kernel I used in 5.2, and had it fail, saying that sound must be compiled seperately (or something to that effect, I didnt save the message). Hello all, Should I have 6 mingettys (1 parent 6 children), 6 httpds (apache), and 4 nfsiods running everytime I look at ktop, say???? Also, when I start up the machine, I see it is loading Apache server, yet I do not run a web server, have a stan-alone machine, and just dial-in to my isp. I have read what man pages exist on these things, but am still to new to Linux to make clear sense of them. Help!! Thanks, Chris - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

If you have chosen to install these packages, more or less unconsciously, then they will be started until you uninstall them. As concerning the Apache web server, well, I have also a standalone machine yet I run a web server because I need to test cgi-script before putting them on the net. StartServers 5 is in your httpd.conf this tells apache to start up 5 servers. When you install just about any linux distro there are just about always a service or server you do not need Since I don't use Yast I can't be sure. But Yast should be able to turn off httpd which is started up at boot up. A kill -9 pid of httpd parent should kill the server too. you should have many gettys they handle the tty which is your termial. nfsiod I belive is from Network File System. If you don't mount another hd from another computer on your network you proably don't need it. charles <A HREF="http://theverge.com</A">http://theverge.com</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
