[SLE] System freeze during yast (version 6.2)
I've had a persistent problem recently with Yast 1 freezing the machine during Choose/Install Packages / Package information. My installation device is a SCSI CD-ROM, and Yast does seem to be making the initial access to the CD. The freeze happens when I do a search. Both the keyboard and mouse are dead, and the only way to recover is a hard reboot. However, if I use a different CDROM drive I don't seem to have the problem. I suspect that there's some kind of hardware difficulty because of the difference between drives. However, I don't know what kind of difficulty would cause that kind of freeze-up. Nor do I know how to check out whether the drive/CD combination is working properly. Any advice? If so that would be your problem, I posted a detailed example/problem/fix back when 6.2 was released which you may beable to find in the archives. But in a nutshell, disable the play on tray close and remove from taskbar. pa> I suspect that there's some kind of hardware difficulty because of the pa> difference between drives. Quick check, are you using KDE and if so, do you have the CD-Player in the taskbar set to play CD's on tray close? If so that would be your problem, I posted a detailed example/problem/fix back when 6.2 was released which you may beable to find in the archives. Same as above which I suspect in the CD-Player you have the SCSI cd-rom set as the play device. You can find the message inthe SuSE archives back on Sept. 19, 1999 with the following 'Subject: Yast/KDE/CDROM bug'
Some more experimentation revealed that neither Yast nor KDE has anything to do with the problem I'm encountering. I logged in as root on an ASCII terminal (not running X), mounted the SuSE CD #1 on /cdrom (a SCSI NEC drive), and then tried: tar -cf /dev/null /cdrom The idea was simply to read everything on the CD. After about half a minute, the select light on the CD went out and the system was totally hung, with the keyboard unresponsive (even the CapsLock key had no effect, and Ctl-Alt-Del did nothing either). One other odd bit of behavior: though normally I can't eject a mounted CD (the eject button on the drive is electronically disabled), after the system became hung, I was able to manually eject the CD. Does anyone have ideas on how to diagnose the problem?
