If you run 'mkinitrd' as root, at the end, it'll list the boot splash theme and size. If it doesn't list splash, you can do 'mkinitrd -s 1024x768'
That mkinitrd -s thing fixed it partially, thanks! Read what it did in Dominique's post. Still get the text scrolling after the bootsplash screen though. :(

Let's try the following:
you have bootsplash installed? #> rpm -q bootsplash
And the fitting branding package #> rpm -q bootsplash-branding-openSUSE
The bootsplash service is enable? #> chkconfig splash_early (splash_early actually does not do anything). #> chkconfig splash
One more thing for you to verify: The content of /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash make sure it's enabled in there and that it has a Theme activated (which exists in /etc/bootsplah/themes If it was disabled here, you'll have to make the #> mkinitrd -s 1024x768 again. I have had the same problem for a while now. it has been one of those "I'll get to it someday" sort of problems. I tried just adding the vga line, but all it did was make my text smaller. But following the instructions from NKoli (26 Jan) I now have the lovely green splash screen back. Open terminal, su, mkinitrd, watch for the closing line (mine was 1024x768).
