Are you referring to a Dell Dimension 4400 Tower PC? If so those are old, and would likely have a Pentium 4 so it should work fine. WiFi will not require hplip or openJDK and should only require you to install the necessary drivers for your WiFi hardware. If you do not have Atheros, which it sounds like you do not then they more than likely will not be available from the Installation DVD. In my experiences with Dell they typically utilize Broadcom which has closed source drivers. although I have not really seen any Dell tower PCs that include integrated WiFi though. What is the actual computer model and what is the actual hardware you are using? If you can boot from a Live CD or Live USB run the: `lspci && lsusb && cat /proc/cpuinfo` utilities to collect all your hardware info. My ASUS X200CA-HCL12050 notebook (which works great with GNU/Linux and are available for around $279.00) for example provides the following: #lspci && lsusb && cat /proc/cpuinfo 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI Host Controller (rev 04) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 04) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev c4) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev c4) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 04) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series Chipset Family 6-port SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 04) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 04) 02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA8172 Fast Ethernet (rev 10) Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. The overlap between the hardware you have and Dell hardware I use with 13.1, plus the modem and wireless you've added, suggests a possibility that too little RAM could possibly be your problem. Exactly when during 13.1 did the failure occur, and how did it manifest? If you haven't already, I suggest if you can't add more RAM you try enabling swap prior to letting installation proceed past the first GUI step. Switch to vtty2 and run swapon if a swap partition already exists. If it doesn't, try partitioning that includes creating a prepared swap partition in advance of commencing another 13.1 installation attempt. Also you could try disabling unneeded resources in the motherboard BIOS (LPT port, serial ports, etc.). If you haven't tried running memtest lately, run it through several passes. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Their is a closed source driver for your USB WiFi available on the manufacturer website. I do not see it in openSUSE 13.1 or in OBS currently. http://www.engeniustech.com.sg/node/277 you will need to download and install it. You can open up a Bug Request and ask to have it packaged, it might get packaged as part of Non-OSS if it is possible to package it! I would contact the company and request that they create an open source driver and submit it into the Linux Kernel. You also have an NVIDIA graphics card, are you using the open source driver or are you using the closed source driver? I do not know much about NVIDIA as I stay with Intel Graphics "Open Source Drivers in Mesa!" you can make a post on the openSUSE forum under Hardware to get suggestions regarding this. Also in the output from lsusb the WiFi device is not listed, after you install the driver you may have to unplug it and then plug it back in. Are you just now migrating this from Windows XP due to the End of Support for Windows XP? Interesting as it works with no use of their closed driver in 11.4

Just whatever comes out of the install disk and have not gotten to that problem. Might have to consider 11.4 until 13 gets the bugs out.

I did not do the lsusb etc test with device in as the second install is crappy especially GNOME

No just trying to make a multiboot system. May have to put in another drive and go with 11.4 until I can buy more memory. CWSIV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Basically I have an Engenius EUB 9603H usb connected wireless device I am trying to make work on a dell dimension 4400 with 512mb memory and a 2 gig Intel processor. I tested the hardware with the existing OS XP which I intend to replace. I was able to make the wireless work and download 13.1. Ill get the other details when I am not running off to work. Am I running on too little memory?? Strange thing is second clean install is worse than first and gnome comes up as three large blockx of gray with no icons. I will be keeping 13.1 on the 60gig drive and using anotherone for 11.4. I CWSIV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

This card is reported to have an RTL8188 chip..whose driver is in the kernel "staging" section.. that usually means the driver is not yet ready for prime time.. apparently it is maintained by Larry Finger who is a regular on this list. 512 MB RAM is certain little for modern standards, I have serious doubts that KDE or GNOME will perform well with that amount ..but a lightweight DE may do the trick. 512 MB RAM is certain little for modern standards, I have serious doubts that KDE or GNOME will perform well with that amount ..but a lightweight DE may do the trick. Strange now I am trying with 11.4 I am having it freeze on install at 70% of probing hardware search for system files. I did a media check and the disk checks fine. I have another 11.4 system with a 512mb and the install worked there just fine so I am wondering if the dell has a problem.
there is always the other box install cheat by putting the 200G drive in the working system and doing the install there and moving it back. If that works the additional memory will be purchased.

first I have to get the install to work. But with 11.4 having issue on the Dell it may be a HW issue. -- Lynux the choice of a GNU generation ,= ,-_-. =. Very likely this problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague I found bad caps on a 4400 about last November. Time to pop it open and look. Likely you'll see several bad ones. If you don't see any on the motherboard, open up the power supply and look inside it. Many times this is a problem one can fix oneself if the hardware is worth keeping working, but with i845 I suggest retirement. http://www.badcaps.net/ Your money is better spent elsewhere than on RAM for such an old system. You can get a several years newer and faster Dell from Craigslist or eBay for as little as you might pay for more RAM. e.g. GX620 http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/sys/4370632182.html -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Basically I have an Engenius EUB 9603H usb connected wireless device I am trying to make work on a dell dimension 4400 with 512mb memory and a 2 gig Intel processor.
I tested the hardware with the existing OS XP which I intend to replace. I was able to make the wireless work and download 13.1.
Did you download via the wireless connection? I'd be surprised to see acceptable throughput with any wireless device connected to a USB 1.1 port:
Yes I used the back ports which must have been the 2.0 the front ports are a pain to get to. CWSIV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What is it makes you think you have any 2.0 USB ports? According to http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2014-03/msg00375.html and everything I've been able to find about a Dimension 4400[1] you don't have anything except 1.1. Whatever I have it worked in XP for downloading in the Dell 4400 with 512mb. The other P4 has only 512 and the 11.4 install worked there but not on the Dell. It could be the Dell as I have attempted to install 11.4 with three different burns of the install media which I did media check upon and each stopped at the same place. I note there is a install from hard drive and then I can always install on the working system and move the drive back which is the trick I used for SuSE 10.0 which this HP Kayak I use for email still runs and well I might add except for dated browsers which crash too much. It would seem that desktop cases are not the only puzzle Dell provides for the user besides still carrying memory for this old box which mazes out at 1G. -- Lynux the choice of a GNU generation ,= ,-_-. =. seems to be useless whats more to try to get wireless working I seem to need hplip-hpiJs and Java-1_7_0-openjdk.
wifi does not require either of those packages.
attempts to install from the dvd do not work even with a clean install. Now I read this one core processor may not work at all because of this systemd.
Systemd does not control the amount of CPU cores available.
Is there a way to correct these flaws other than installing 11.4 which works on most all of the rest of my computers.
Be more specific with your problem, this email barely made sense.

Close to impossible to respond to definitively without knowing what your wireless hardware is.
attempts to install from the dvd do not work even with a clean install.
Did you md5sum the download before burning it, or verify it afterward?
Now I read this one core processor may not work at all because of this systemd.
Cristian answered this.

I have a big bunch of single core Dells with 13.1 working just fine. None are any kind of "4400". If you provide the specifications of a "4400" maybe someone could recognize some reason for your trouble, or suggest steps to take. Does the "4400" come shipped from Dell with wireless? What wireless hardware does it have? Did you try installing wired to ethernet, then adding wireless afterward? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
