OK Got it. These guys have it: http: //ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.2/Printing.repo mirrors?
Mirrors are used for load balancing and locality. (no need for traffic around the world if the mirror at the university next to your ISP connection also has the data) See: https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Mirrors/Intro http://mirrors.opensuse.org/ The cavehead is that the software behind the redirection (Mirrorbrain) sometimes has "hickups" or no reliable info (e.g. IPv6). Then such failures as seen by you can happen. In such cases, replacing "http://download.opensuse.org/" with a known mirror server solves the trouble. Yes, Thanks for that. I ran into this with Ubuntu last year. They call it alternative downloads. I searched opensuse alternative downloads and mirrors appeared second, beneath the Ubuntu. There's only 1 Spanish mirror. Would this also explain why online update failed? Is there a way to choose that ftp5 site permanently, or a quick way of switching? Also I see that the printing stuff is experimental. Is it possible to freeze the repository and prevent it adding anything else now that I have it working? Thanks again. That they happen is not good reason for permanently switching to any particular mirror. OTOH, temporarily switching is not unusually the only practical workaround if something from them is needed right away while a hiccup is in progress.

Gwdg.de is a very good mirror, but like any mirror, it has its own hiccups occasionally. A "permanent" switch to it subjects you to its foibles without opportunity to use another as Mirrorbrain should provide during a time when gwdg.de is having hiccups.

A Spanish mirror won't necessarily be faster within Spain than other European mirrors. It might even be routinely slower.
Is there a way to choose that ftp5 site permanently, or a quick way of switching?
Yes. Each *.repo file in /etc/zypp/repos.d/ is a component of your total repository configuration. Files there with such extensions as .repobak or .repogwdg are ignored. You can create a whole fleet of files there or elsewhere that can be copied to or from valid .repo files according to what repos you want to be active, and as quickly as renaming or copying any small text file. Save Printing.repo to some other name, then edit it to change from download.opensuse.org/ to ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/ if you really want to limit yourself to one single mirror that may or may not be up to date or overloaded when you need to use it.

Please, do yourself a favor and do NOT delete a *.repo file, but rename it. e.g. "mv Printing.repo Printing.repobak" But, a even more easy and transparent way to stop updateing and installing from a repo is to disable it. e.g. "zypper -mr -R -d Printing" Then installed packages from this repo will remain, but no update for these packages will be done. Sorry, if these appear to be stupid questions (again) but your help and patience is invaluable.
Please, do yourself a favor and do NOT delete a *.repo file, but rename it. Yep. I remember now. I can then go back to it. Slapped wrists. Bad file management.
e.g. "mv Printing.repo Printing.repobak" Does this prevent it updating? I mean yast online update. If possible. But, a even more easy and transparent way to stop updateing and installing from a repo is to disable it.

I have this:
download.opensuse.org-lxde.repo repo-debug-update-non-oss.repo ftp.gwdg.de-suse.repo repo-debug-update.repo home:darkhado:openSUSE.repo repo-non-oss.repo network:chromium.repo repo-oss.repo openSUSE-13.2-0.repo repo-source.repo opensuse-guide.org-repo.repo repo-update-non-oss.repo Printing.repo repo-update.repo repo-debug.repo
Can you give me a yes/no on these?
Yes/no as to what? One must look inside each and see whether enabled=0 or enabled=1 and autorefresh=0 or autorefresh=1 and keeppackages=0 or keeppackages=1 to determine their states. =0 means disabled, =1 means enabled.
Are those the repositories which online update reads?
Assuming each contains entirely valid content, and all are enabled, they will all be combined to comprise the entirety of packages available to your installation.
If I delete Printing.repo do the packages that were installed from it remain?
As long as certain conditions are kept in place, yes. As long as VendorChange is kept disallowed, they should remain. If you take the trouble to lock them they will certainly remain.
If I delete Printing.repo will it update any longer?
If it's not there, what it contains cannot be found by any of the tools designed to use them.
zypper al <packagename> will lock any package, installed or not, until such time as you do zypper rl <packagename>, or you do something with zypper or yast to induce it to ask you if you wish the lock to be removed and you answer yes.
OK. So If al locks a package. What locks a repository?
I don't believe exists anything fitting that description. You can give individual repos stronger authority by setting "priority=" to a number lower than 99. buhorojo , why don't you use zypper to tell us what the settings of those are as Felix mentions. if you RTFM you'll find there list a 'list repositories' option for zypper <quote> repos (lr) [options] [repo] ... List all defined repositories or show detailed information about those specified as arguments </quote> There are options to show the information Felix mentions and tabulate it all in easy to read format. If you run that and supply us with the table we well better be able to answer you questions. You can then tell us what you mean when you ask "yes/no". -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It depends what you mean by "locks". In one sense making the .repo file impermiable (aka undeletabnlle) is one kind of lock :-) BSD has the 'no-unlink' file property and also 'immutable' as both a file and a directory setting. As far as I know Linux only has 'immutable' for files, RTFM CHATTR <quote> A file with the 'i' attribute cannot be modified: it cannot be deleted or renamed, no link can be created to this file and no data can be written to the file </quote> which seems to roll both into the one function. On the other hand, if by 'lock' you mean 'no furhter action, no changes resulting from this repository', once again RTFM for zypper under "Repository Management" <quote> modifyrepo (mr) <options> <alias|name|#|URI> ... modifyrepo (mr) <options> <--all|--remote|--local|--medium-type> Modify properties of repositories specified by alias, name, number, or URI or one of the aggregate options. </quote> That's "zypper mr ..." not "zypper -mr ..." <quote> -d, --disable Disable the repository. </quote> In this sense, disable means 'lock out of use'. In this sense, disable means 'lock out of use'.
So, what do you mean when you speak of "lock"?
Please read the documentation. A lock on a repository prevents access to the same. Get started with: zypper --help Then read the manual: man zypper FYI, to lock a repository use the following: zypper mr Please google for the arguments or use the help files. It will be the same in 2016. HTH -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I do not have a 13.2 to test the procedure myself. The posts I could see from you did not contain the needed info, or it was so muddled I could not notice it.
My fault. I'm new to all this. There is so much private communication _telling_ me what to do and how to react. It's far too personal. I know my questions are poorly worded. I'll try a few weeks more. Then give up. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

When you're new to mailing lists, looking up the proper netiquette might be good place to start. These are two pretty straight forward rules/suggestions - please don't top-post please trim your posts. ask smart questions Start with the top 2, and you're well on your way. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.5°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yep :-) Consider that most of us are here to try to help, and we will try to make do with language barriers, insufficient data, wrong questions-answers... I added it using zypper. I rarely use Yast. At least with CLI you get error messages that give you a clue as to what's going on! RTFM. or zypper --help which should lead you to zypper addrepo --help which might even let you try zypper addrepo \ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/ \ Printing You don't even need to say which release :-) Zypper is smart :-) Now, go and read the man page so you understand WHY that works. As I keep saying, UNIX/Linux is about learning a few basic patterns of how things work and generalizing from them. Once you learn that you can solve most problems. It is only in the Windows world are you stuck behind a GUI and have to be shown what buttons to press and what fields to enter, and its probably different for managing different releases. Note that I said you don't need to say what release when using zypper. That means it worked on my old 10.x and 11.x systems and will work on your 13.2 system. Want to bet it will work on 13.3 and 14.1 and 14.2?

Click on the URL(s) you've been given using a browser to determine that the .repo file, for example, is accessible. Make sure this is not a network problem or a typo problem. I realise that my saying, Yamaban saying "it works for me" is of no help to you, but we're "elsewhere" with different network connectivity. We can access that server, that file. Right now I'm thinking that if you don't have (possibly intermittent) network problems then there is a typo somewhere. Rather than cut-and-paste the whole thing, build up start with $ firefox <url> if the url comes up, Ok. If not then you have a typo. This determines you have a correctly typed URL and that the target is accessible. Then edit that command line to replace "firefox" with "sudo zypper addrepo -n Printing ...." And all the rest. The man page on the shell explains command line editing, but its not complicated. At a blank command prompt the up arrow key recalls the previous command. Then the left/right arrow keys to move and backspace to delete on the line, and type in what else you need. You can do wondrous things with the CLI that are impossible with a GUI!

Make sure this is not a network problem or a typo problem. You can see it's not a typo. I posted the output from root. Please read

So then, do not say it.

One way is to open that URL in a web browser, then click on http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.2/Printing.re... and save it to /etc/zypp/repos.d/. Once that's done, do 'zypper ref'. It's then ready for YOU, Zypper and YaST to use. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Yup, that works. I used wget, then zypper ref. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.3°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What I've tried: yast, software repositories, add, specify url, next, url of the repository, http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.2/, next
Cannot access installation media http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.2/ (Medium 1). Check whether the server is accessible.
I do as it says: Index of /repositories/Printing/openSUSE_13.2
Icon Name Last modified Size [DIR] Parent Directory - [ ] Printing.repo 14-May-2015 15:28 271 Details
If you simply copy this repo file to /etc/zypp/repos.d using a more appropriate name that will take care of most of the work for you. You then only need change preferences using YaST-->Software Repositories. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
