I hope the SuSE folk don't kill me for asking this, but I noticed the link
to SuSE 8.0 info on suse.de, but not suse.com. Can we expect an English
version soon? Judging from the few screenshots on the German site, it
looks like yet another killer version! (YaKV?) ;^)
Cheers,

Looks really interesting. Installation procedure in only three steps, if my german doesn't suck too much. I hope there's an "expert" mode :) Crypto filesystem isn't new, but it protects "laptops and harddrives", which is interesting. //Anders

Here's what Google did to the German portion above the picture of the 8.0
box:
"Thus them look, the new 8,0 Professional, or at least nearly in such a
way. For most user however becomes more important its, which is behind it
which puts in it. In addition there are from now on regular views. Much
fun!"
I wish I new German... ;^)

Ack! Babelfish should be renamed to Butcherfish :). Feel sorry for SuSE when that US company used Babelfish to translate an e-mail into German. Must have been caught between laughing or crying :). Matt Ps Yes generally better than nothing.

I will print the pages and get a German friend to translate them correctly...:-) Speaking of translations, that reminds me of a guy I used to work with - he had a manual translated from English to German, and some time later had to go back the other way for some reason. At that point, they realised that the original Ennglish -> German translation had been, shall we say, less than perfect (a "phonetic" translation, rather than a "grammatical" one). In the original, it spoke of putting a plug into a socket, which was translated into German as something like "put der plug into der schlit" - apparently "der schlit" is somewhat descriptive of part of the female anatomy...:-) Much hillarity ensued !!! Jon
Hi guys'n'dolls, Couldn't help looking for the info myself, and here is my trans-wolfi-ation of the germaniac text, maybe slightly better understandable than the bablefish version:
So sieht sie aus, die neue 8.0 Professional, oder zumindest fast so. Wichtiger für die meisten User aber wird sein, was dahinter steckt, was drin steckt. Dazu gibt es ab jetzt regelmäßige Einblicke. Viel Spaß!
That's how the new 8.0 professional will look (or at least similar like that). More important for most of the users will be: What's inside? On this issue, we will have some closer looks from now on. Have a lot of fun!
Und die ganz "Aufgeweckten" können die neue 8.0 schon jetzt bestellen. Als Professional für EUR 79,90, als Personal oder Update für EUR 49,90, jeweils zuzüglich EUR 4,90 Versandgebühren.
For those who can't wait, you can order 8.0 already. As Professional for 80€ , Personal or Update is 50€. Port is five € in both cases. # I cheat you for ten €-Pfennigs.
Wenn da nur nicht eine kleine Frage wäre, die Sie vorher noch beantworten müssen. Wie heißt der aktuelle Systemassistent mit dem Sie SuSE Linux in weniger als 20 Minuten installieren können?
There's one little question left, which you gotta answer before: How is the current setup assistent called, which lets you set up SuSE Linux in less than twenty minutes? Cheers ... I think you are jumping the gun on your question here. The product has not
been released yet, it is nothing more than a 'teaser' for people who find it on
their site.
I would be VERY surprised if there is not an English version released when
the final product is released.
Sorry if you are just asking if there is going to be a teaser on the english
site.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my message was I. I *was* just asking about
an English version of the teaser, or better yet, more detailed info about
the product. I'm sure SuSE will release that info when it's available, but
I guess I'm just too impatient. ;^)

Yeah - I think they screwed up - the 2.2.18 kernel ? I don't think so, Tim !!
Hi; What I should like to know is how it comes that I had some error messages from certain packages, refusing to install, during the install of the 7.2 Pro. I use an AMD 1200,512 MB SDRAM,Maxtor G 450 video,40GB WD. I suspect it has something to do with my Athlon. I heared there are still probs with linux support for AMD. While using the 7.2 Netscape, both 4.7 and 6.0 crashed. Am I right? Is the Athlon not well supported by Linux? Prob is,I bought the 7.2 and I do expect it to work. After all,I paid for it. I'm running a similar system (Athlon 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard-drive, but ATI Radeon 8500). I installed SuSE 7.2 Pro successfully (twice, in fact). There may be other issues with your particular motherboard, however (mine's an Epox). As for Netscape: sometimes I'll get crashes too, particularly if I'm browsing some Java-heavy sites. I don't see this as a SuSE thing at all. If it's crashed and leaves screen-debris (or is locked up), I'll open a console, type 'xkill', then click in the dead Netscape window. -Gord (can't offer much more than this without specific error messages) -- Gordon Pritchard, P.Eng., Member IEEE Technical University of B.C. - Research Lab Engineer mailto:gordon.pritchard@techbc.ca direct phone: 604-586-6186

Linux is usually pretty reliable on Athlons, there is an occasional memory corruption bug on Athlon systems with AGP video that can be fixed by adding the parameter mem=nopentium to your lilo boot command line. This has been fixed in the latest kernels, (you might want to install a more recent kernel from the people/mantel directory on most SuSE ftp mirrors.) but this is a perfectly good work-around that gets rid of that problem without affecting performance much. Since it's an intermittant in nature problem (the only one I know of for Athlons) I doubt the fact you're running an Athlon is what is causing the bugs. -- Legalize free-enterprise murder: why should governments have all the fun?
