[opensuse] Leap 15 as Vmware Host
Has anyone been able to get Leap 15 run Vmware as a host, specifically Vmware 12 branch? Was going to switch to VirtualBox, but those packages in opensuse repositories are back level as well. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Have you tried the packages for virtualbox from virtualbox.org? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not yet, but that's where I'm headed next. They appear to be built for 13.2, Although they seem to suggest the might work with leap 42.2. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. The packages supplied by Oracle seem to install and run just fine on Leap 15. The very last thing mentioned on this page https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads is the first thing I recommend, First import Oracle's key (as root) from the "RPM-based Linux distributions" section. then cd to /etc/zypp/repos.d/ , and download their repro definition file (last link on the line that reads "Users of openSUSE can add the proper repo file". Then install with zypper or yast as you prefer. Before building any machines go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and follow the section about installing extension packs. (This bit is not opensource so use your own paranoia). -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Nope. As I saw problems with the installer partitioner, I thought it risky to try on my main computer till convinced. As it is, on 42.3 I need to run a patched VMware Player 12.5.9. I'm going to switch to VB. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

I'd go with virtualbox. Use the 13.2 packages at: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.10/ and the vbox-extpack. Works fine. I have Windows, Arch and Leap 15 beta running in it without any issues. -- David C. That's what I downloaded. But when virtual box tries to compile it's drivers they fail on some opensuse source header file. Haven't figured it out yet. They build fine with the following on 42.3: kernel-default-4.4.126-48.2.x86_64 kernel-default-devel-4.4.126-48.2.x86_64 kernel-devel-4.4.126-48.1.noarch kernel-firmware-20170530-17.1.noarch kernel-macros-4.4.126-48.1.noarch kernel-source-4.4.126-48.1.noarch kernel-syms-4.4.126-48.1.x86_64 -- David C. They also build fine against: Linux valkyrie 4.16.3-1-ARCH so it isn't a kernel or virtualbox package thing. The only packaging hiccup was with 5.1.28 which last built against 4.14?, but other than that I have had no problems building on opensuse or Arch. (I didn't want to move to 5.2.0, but the Arch kernel forced me to take the plunge on that box) -- David C. Follow up to the list to say that the Leap-15 latest builds of VirtualBox do work perfectly. The ones from Virtualbox install, but won't build the drivers correctly, lots of compile errors. But the Opensuse packages work perfectly. (This is something of a mixed blessing, because it seems unlikely VirtualBox is ever going to bother to correct their stuff to build against 4.12, and fixing VirtualBox packages can hardly be an Opensuse priority. So Opensuse packages may lag Virtual box new features. And if you EVER have a problem with VirtualBox, the FIRST question they ask is "Who's Package are you using" and they send you packing if it isn't theirs. So for Leap-15 I'm kinda locked into Opensuse packages. On the other hand: IINBDFI, (If Its Not Broke...) and as long as my VMs are stable I'm fine. I generally don't need a boat load of new features. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

kernel-source is not need to compile out of tree modules since kernel 2.6 I believe if not earlier. And I am curious how exactly you install "kernel headers". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
