[opensuse] USB camera detected, but refuses to download images
I have a Canon S60 camera that worked all right in OpenSuse 10.0. But I am having strange trouble in 10.3. I plug the USB in, the camera is detected (/var/log/messages) below and a dialogue appears offering me to open it in Digkam or in a new window. If I choose Digkam, it reports that it cannot connect to camera, no matter home many times I try. I tried both normal and PTP mode without success. If I choose "open in new window", I can eventually do it - after 4 or 5 tries. Most of the time I will get a "stalled" message, and from time to time "unable to lock device" error. Even if it opens, I can browse through folders, select some images and start copying them to my HD - and the camera will stall again. I eventually manage to download things, but it takes half an hour or more of attemtps to get through this process, and since Digikam doesn't work, I cannot use many of its most useful functions, such as downloading only new images. I am on a Sony Vaio PCG V505DP laptop, running the system with all the latest updates. There are no error messages that I can see in /var/log/messages. How would I go about trying to debug this? Not having a clue what the debug stuff says, do you have any other USB devices you can test with? I'd be curious if it is a 10.3 thing or an issue with your camera. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Well, a USB pen drive works just fine - no issues there. The thing is, why would it have worked in earlier versions (both 9.3 and 10.0), and not work now? Nothing much happenned to this camera in between my last try on 10.0 and the 10.3 update - I would say it's unlikely that the something went wrong with it. Very strange. Maybe you'll get someone to say they updated teh USB subsysetm in 10.3. In any case, thought you'd get a kick out of this interaction with Canon. You HAVE written them haven't you??

Dear Kai Ponte:
Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your PowerShot S60. Unfortunately, our products aren't supported by Linux, we don't offer drivers for linux.
We have drivers for Windows and Mac based pcs. Thank you very much for writing back.
I understand you have drivers for Windows PCs. I have upgraded to
Linux.
Please tell me where the linux drivers are.
Dear K. Ponte:
Thank you for your reply. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
While considering the desire to provide the best possible support for Canon's products, Canon must make decisions on which products to support when new operating systems are introduced. Currently, Canon has decided to support only the Microsoft Windows and the Macintosh operating systems. We understand, and sincerely apologize for any frustration you have experienced if your are using another operating system, but we hope that you understand our rationale.
Thank you for your quick response.
Since Linux has been out for 16 years, do you think you might be able to get your resources moved on to supporting it anytime soon?
When will you support linux? I upgraded from Windows Vista and expect vendors to support modern operating systems.
Dear K. Ponte:
Thank you for your reply. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
Currently we have not had sufficient demand from Linux users to warrant the creation of Linux drivers for PowerShot cameras. Whether this is due to many Linux users using multiple operating systems or opting for card readers is not known to us.
We have forwarded your comments to Canon USA through our Customer Feedback process. This process allows us to capture important feedback from our valued customers. As we constantly strive to improve our products and services, your comments are vital to our continued success.

Support companies that do actively support Linux? Sorry, couldn't resist. Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
This started to work way better after the latest update, which brought in a newer version of libgphoto2. I still have to try several times before I can get Digikam to connect, but it is finally usable again. On Nov 10, 2007 4:12 PM, Myrosia Dzikovska <myrosia@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello I may be ignorant, but wouldn't it be possible to use the Umass driver? I hope the powershot can be set to act like a simple USB mass storage device, and not only to Pictbridge. You would need to set it somewhere in the menu. Hope it helps Neil On Nov 24, 2007 8:31 PM, Myrosia Dzikovska <myrosia@gmail.com> wrote:
