Works fine with SuSE 10.3 (and not 10.2 yet, 10.2 wouldn't support the built in Ethernet), except: - wifi (needs new HAL driver for this Atheros chip version, part of the Madwifi project, hopefully coming soon. Using ndiswrapper and the 64bit WinXP driver worked once, but not anymore ... dunno why, replaced by dlink usb wifi stick with ralink km.) - sound does not work with the boxed SuSE 10.3, but works fine only after upgrading all ALSA stuff to the very latest version, this includes the ALSA kernel module, and setting options in some of the modprobe.d files: ---- /etc/modprobe.d/sound --- options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel --- end --- ---- /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base --- options snd-hda-intel model=acer --- end --- - webcam (not investigated why yet, may be just loading a driver) - (memory card reader not tested yet) - suspend stuff not tested (don't need it) Overall nice notebook for that price, I use it as daily workhorse. Gets a little hot if having to run at full speed for longer time, you might wanna use a notebook cooler. HTH Matt
I have a Aspire 5100 with a AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-56 running openSUSE 10.3 and everything works fine, had to use NDISwrapper for the wireless card but thats all, anyways to the point the webcam that Acer uses in their laptops you can find the driver in the webcam driver repo that SUSE has. The only program that I have found that they work with is Kopete and GAIM, or should I say Pidgin. The card reader works out of the box, I can't say anything about the suspend eather, I haven't played with it. One thing that I find about my laptop is that the open sound system is louder than AlSA, so I would test both on your system to see which one works best for you. I do have to say I like Acer's laptops for about $700 USD I have a laptop that preforms better than my friends $1,000 USD Dell laptop. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thanks for the advice given.
Not sure about Linux compatibility. Does anybody have or know one of these?
And then I ended up with an Acer Aspire 5920 as it was priced as the Acer Aspier 5520. Installation went very smooth. Only problem that I had to google for was wifi. Seems it requores a program called ipw3945d. When I started that program, it could connect to my wifi net with 54 mbps. Two things remain though. I have to use ifup instead of rcnetwork if I want to use wifi. Seems that it simply won't accept an IP-address from the dhcp server. And I'm not sure that the graphics adapter is installed correctly. I get
glxgears 5572 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1114.370 FPS 5759 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1151.681 FPS 5861 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1172.012 FPS
Not too impressive on that hardware, or should I be satisfied with that? -- Med venlig hilsen Kaare Rasmussen, Jasonic Jasonic Telefon: +45 3816 2582 Nordre Fasanvej 12 2000 Frederiksberg Email: kaare@jasonic.dk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

HP's are very Linux compatible. I have a dv8000, and I'm quite satisfied with it. I don't have wireless working, but that's because I haven't put the slightest effort into doing so. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
