[opensuse] Trouble with Konsole
Hello SuSE people, Testing 11.1 with KDE 4.1 Konsole, or any terminal refuses to use my hostname. When it opens it says bob@linux-81s3 ~Documents. Where do I change that? It also will not keep any configuration I have set for it. Bob S PS KDE4 still has a loooong way to go. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

To set/change hostname, do the following: 1) Start yast2. 2) Select Network Settings. 3) Select Hostname/DNS tab. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you don't mind updating, you will change your mind over KDE4 with KDE 4.2. See http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/KDE4#Installation for URLs, or 1-click install links. To keep your main desktop in good condition, ie. skip glitches that happen when you switch between KDE3 and KDE4, create new user and assign to that user KDE4 as default desktop. You can do that at login screen. First, select user. Second, in bottom left corner are 2 barely visible menus. The most left is the default desktop setting. When done login and have a fun. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello Rajko, No I don't mind updating. I did the oneclick right after it was put in the "Factory" repo. At that time it also installed the regular "Factory" repo and I ended up with 11.2 alpha. Couldn't back out of that and ended up reinstalling 11.1 with KDE4.1. After I did that I saw a couple of threads concerning the QT versions and it's interaction with 4.2. I even asked on this list. on the 19th, (One click or not?) what other people were doing. Didn't get a reply. I will answer ne (whoever the hell he is directly. There is Factory where whole distribution is changing, not KDE alone, and there is KDE-factory, which is compiled for 11.1, for instance in the: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/ you have 5 options (directories): SLE_10/ 20-Feb-2009 18:38 - openSUSE_10.3/ 20-Feb-2009 18:44 - openSUSE_11.0/ 20-Feb-2009 18:58 - openSUSE_11.1/ 20-Feb-2009 18:45 - openSUSE_Factory/ 21-Feb-2009 17:29 - You have 11.1 and you can use: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... If you see dependency problem, better ask the list before you select some option. I had problem too, and from all conflicts at the end all settled with 2-3 packages, and since then I had no conflicts. The only problem is that anyone able to help you have to see the list of conflicts. There are few options. For instance: - Using text, which can be complicated with line breaks, - Using images and http://www.imgbin.org/, created with PrtScr key, ie. KSnapshot, which may need more than one image to get whole picture.
I will answer ne (whoever the hell he is directly.
The only problem I can see is mismatch in the mood that happened today, so I would not extend the problem. See my reply.

Keep language civil Steve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEBKAC IMHO it is not an insult, it is just statement of the fact. Sooner or later everyone will do something that can be characterized as PEBKAC, so it is merely: "Welcome to the company, Our sympathy. We feel your pain, but we are happy to tell you that you joined the largest and the most active computer related community. ... <move to offtopic list and expand>" In particular case, network card is configured with minimum clicks and result is default host name. Though, ne... (and after him you) rushed and you both did some kind of PEBKAC. ne... : at least some console settings really don't stick in KDE 4.1. I gave up on configuring profiles, but this reminded me to check again. Steve : there are civil way to inform someone that he made mistake too Me : writing long answer insted to stop after first sentence ? -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

PEBKAC indeed! Maybe you ought to follow your own advice. When you have been on this list as long as I have been maybe you will learn not to shoot off your mouth without knowing anything about the person you are responding to. And I don't mean me in particular, anybody. I am by no means an expert as you purportedly are, but I do know the basics of how to set these things up, I only ask when I can't figure out what happened after doing the proper things. FYI The hostname is properly set up with Yast in Network Settings > Hostname. There is no Hostname/DNS tab in 11.1 like there is in 10.3 or I would have gone through that also. (Jay, thanks, but no cigar) So tell me hotshot, and I'm asking "nicey nice" what is the problem with Yast or bash that bash doesn't see the properly set up hostname in Konsole or an Xterm? Where are you nasty arrogant people coming from? This used to be a nice list.
