I'm having trouble enabling java support in Netscape 7. I've installed it using the standard Netscape installer and also installed the Blackdown jre compiled with gcc3.2 (which I believe is necessary for mozilla and Netscape), made the appropriate symlinks as detailed in the java docs, but no joy. Does anyone have any tips or can it be made to function with SunJava 1.3 as comes as default with 8.1? Many thanks. David -- Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes

Because Netscape 7 is compiled with GCC 2.95.x you should use Sun's 1.4.1 pkg. The Blackdown.org pkg is compiled with GCC 3.2 and is compatible with SuSE 8.1, RH 8.0 and Mandrake 9.0 which have Mozilla compiled with GCC 3.2...however it won't work with Netscape 7. You can have both Java pkgs installed..they won't interfere with each other. Just make the symlinks to the java plugins yourself. For Mozilla compiled with GCC 3.2 using the Blackdown.org pkg the link should look like this. libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/j2re1.4.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so The plugin in the Blackdown pkg doesn't have lib in the name but you have to make sure the symlink that Mozilla sees in it's plugin directory has this. For Netscape 7 it should look like this. libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/j2re1.4.1-Sun/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so Notice that when I installed the .bin file for the Sun Java pkg I renamed the directory with a -Sun then moved it to /usr/lib. You can make symlinks from Moz and Netscape7 to each of these and unless you change the /usr/lib/java symlink then it won't break anything in the system. It just takes up space. ;) So that's about it if your going to use Mozilla (compiled with GCC 3.2) and Netscape 7. cheers! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Thanks Ben - I have java working fine in Netscape 7 (and Mozilla) now. So, I'm half way there with my task! For my online banking I need java, but I also need to change the user agent, so I tried installing the PrefBar from xulplanet so I could do that. It installed OK but doesn't seem to interact well with java on Mozilla - the browser just crashes if I change the user agent and try to access the bank site. So, I had hoped this might work with Netscape instead but it's just the same. On browsing for help with this, it seems that java is dependent on a certain user agent setting and doesn't take kindly to it being changed. I'm getting into realms that I really don't understand now, so maybe I'll just have to stick with telephone banking! Thanks for your help - much appreciated. You can change the user agent in mozilla/netscape7 by putting this line in a file called user.js in ~/.mozilla/<bunch of letters>/username/ The line looks like this. user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0)"); It is one line so make sure it's not broken when you save the file. But remember that once Mozilla or Netscape loads and reads this file it will add this line to your prefs.js in the same directory. You must delete both to get it back to normal. You can pretty much put any browser ident in this file. I once had MSIE 101; Windows NT 12.0 and it worked fine. These places that use the user agent string to identify browsers for much more then a general understanding of what people are using are just fooling themselves. Anyway..complain to your bank. They should let any modern browser into their site that does SSL and the like. I've switched banks over this silly behavior. :) Cheers! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I'll tell you what you should see.

Hmm - I don't have a file named "user.js" but I edited "prefs.js" and it did the trick, so, once again, thanks.

Oh, I have complained! Apparently, only IE and Netscape Communicator (up to 4.76) have the "advanced security features" necessary to safeguard my details. Ho, Ho, Ho! It does work fine with Konqueror, provided I change browser identification, but I just don't particularly like it as a browser. All the best. David -- Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes

Netscape 7 comes with its own java, installed in "/opt/netscape7/plugins/java2" "Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition, Version 1.3.1" -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

My installation (which is to /usr/local/netscape) doesn't have "java2" in the plugins directory. I've got it working ok though by symlinking to the main java installation. Thanks anyway. David -- Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes

I think it was a download option. I downloaded "netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-sea.tar.gz" (44244K for version 7.0). As the mozilla that comes with Suse 8.1 doesn't work with Java, as known, I decided to install the complete Netscape as well, because I think it works better with some "official" sites that mozilla does. In /opt/netscape I have version 4.8, installed from the SuSE CD - yes, there are sites that only work with this old version! -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

If you go to blackdown.org and grab their java pkg it works fine with Mozilla if it's compiled with GCC 3.2 because they have a pkg that has been compiled with GCC 3.2. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I'll take a note of that; but as I only have a modem I'll only do it if necesary or if I'm too bored O:-) Anyway, there are sites that only work with netscape 4.x, sometimes with netscape 6, but not with mozilla or anything else - except IE, which I never use. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
