It is not just you. I just upgraded to XFree86 v3.3.3 (using the RPMs found at <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com</A</A>>), and when trying to run "xterm" I get the message "Segmentation fault". Eivind, Yes, I did the same. I just deleted the xf86-3.3.3-2.i386.rpm , then reinstalled it with the same results. I believe this must be a bug. What do you mean with "readable fonts"? If you mean True Type fonts (Microsoft fonts) then they are not provided by the standard Xserver. "The X Window System, the primary GUI used on unices such as Linux, does not currently include native support for TrueType fonts. However X does provide for programs called font servers which can provide font rasterization services for X servers that do not support certain kinds of fonts or do not have the fonts installed locally. There are two open-source font servers that support TrueType fonts, xfstt and xfsft, and also a number of commercial products. " (From True Type HOWTO) IMHO xfstt (X Font Server True Type) is quite good because is really easy to install and has a FAQ which will help you in solving problem. I currently use it on my system. Xfsft (X Font Server FreeType) should be better than xfstt. There is a binary for Linux but I found very difficult to create the fonts.dir required to manage the tt fonts installed on your system. There is a tool which should help you which requires FreeType to be installed on your system but didn't work for me. I did a couple of attemp and then I decided that xfstt is my chosen font server. You will have to **re-compile your kernel to support the card. Under "Network device support" - PCI Ethernet adapters - PCI NE2000 support **if you have never complied your kernel before, read the kernel-HOWTO Then, under yast, System administration, Network configuration, Network base configuration, type F5 and set it to Ethernet. Next, type F6 and set your IP address, Netmask, and Default gateway. Next, type F4 to activate it. ---------------------------------- Danny Kephart <kepe@home.com> Date: 11-Dec-98 Time: 16:51:02 --------------------------------- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

HI,
I recently installed the Linksys card on one of my systems. It uses the DEC Tulip driver. Support is already built into the stock kernel. So, it can easily be configured from YaST. I didn't use any options. The card works great and I plan to install them in all my machines upgrading from 10BaseT to 10Base100X. :-) -- D. R. You are correct , the stock 5.3 kernal loades with no problem , I used the dec tulip driver , no options and it seems to load all right. The full duplex deal I'm not really sure about; however, I understand that it really doesn't make much difference in the real world. But, don't take that as gospel; some one else may know better. :-) As far as the 10Mbit goes, you will have to be connected to a 100Mbit hub. If you are connected to a100Mbit hub, then check the lights on the back of the NIC. The 100Mbit light should be lit. That much I do know for sure. I am going to upgrade my LAN in the next month or two. I am planning to use the Linksys 10/100 8 port hub and Linksys NIC's throught. The 10/100 hub is only a little more money and supporting both standards gives it maximum versatility. Right now, my LAN is a real hodge-podge of 10BaseT ISA/PCI stuff from a variety of manufactures. But, it works and works well! As an aside, if some of you really network savvy folks know of a reason why I shouldn't use Linksys products, PLEASE let me know. -- D. R. FWIW I have a small lan w95 on linksys pci /suse on linksys isa/ rh on linksys isa all 10 base T works incredibly well. The linksys are identified as ne 2000 and pretty much always use 0x300 Its never been a problem identifing the card or loading a module when doing an local ftp install. Any Ideas , The card is on the supported network card list , and the linksys box clearly states it suports linux. I found nothing in the linux manuale , just refrences to the ne200 ethernet card wich is used with the 16 bit isa bus.
I have this card working under 5.3. It uses tulip driver. You might need to recompile your kernel. Also, it works only in half-duplex mode for some reason (according to dmesg). I did not notice any slow down in performance though -- I use it to connect Win95 box to SuSE through IP masquerade. -alexm - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

-alexm I was told by a reasonably sane network engineer that you can only get full duplex if u have an ethernet "SWITCH" rather than just a regular old hub.

What do you guys mean by duplex ?? Why the swich as oposed to the hub ? I have a 4 port hub , with two machines set up now , as soon as I get theese "talking" I will reconect the 466 with a 10 MB card . I assume thAt any of the 100 mg machines will only beable to talk at 10 mg to this one machine ? right ? It wont put the whole network back down to 10 megabit right ?? First, check the specifications/docs for your hub. My cheap 100MB hub will only let 100MB ethernet cards talk on it. There are fancier and more expensive hubs that are "auto-sensing" so u can put a 10MB or 100MB connection on it. An ethernet switch is something that does much more complicated things and hence allows 2-way, that is, full duplex, communication. Switches, which are relatively expensive, are pretty much pointless for a small network since your I/O bus on your motherboard will be saturated long before you can use up 100 MB of bandwidth, let alone 100MB full-duplex. Try booting using DOS, then run the setup program in the utilities directory for the LinkSys card, then disable plug-n-pray, and set the settings manually. I dont remember exactly which ones you NEED. They have been mentioned in a mail someone else wrote on this mailinglist one or two days ago. I downloaded all of the 3.3.3 packages (except for the ones that were X Servers for gfx-cards I didnt have. Anyway, you can find them somewhere on <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/</A</A>>
How / Do I need to remove the older Version ( Preferably with yast ) .I have never used rpms
I didnt remove the old version. I installed the new version "on top of" the old one, using the RPM tool: rpm -U *.rpm should probably do the trick. -- Eivind Olsen | Compo-dude at The Gathering'99! | Hobby-BOFH eivind@aminor.no | Translator of Amiga programs! | Team *AMIGA* - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Samy, 3.3.3-2 - breaks xterm (Lenz says it was done with glibc) 3.3.3-3 - breaks windowmaker (at least on my box it does) so, I went back to 3.3.2-3, and all is well. Shuck , sometimes you just cant win. Ok Bask to basics I neeed to get x to work with the Diamond Stealth Speedstar (A50) AGP Vidio Card. It uses an sis 6326 agp CHIP , big green thing on the board. Whats happing is that it is using a raly low 300X200 Resolution with no Virtual Screen I get the uper left corner of the graphical interface taking upt the whole screen. and It dosent seem to take the hight\r resolution settings. I realy have no Idea how to configure it properly. Sax and xf86setup bith crash and burn , So I am using xf886config , which is a drag as you need to go through the whole thing every time. Any Ideas , I saw a poist that someone was supost to be uploading an new file to fic the libc/g thing , so it will work with windowmaker. So far I am using kde, If I can eveeer get the graphics card to work .. Thanks Samy
