Hi, all -- I have a lovely new Toshiba Satellite system and I would like to put SuSE 8.1 on it. Unfortunately, the Toshiba recovery CD insists on wiping out any partitions on the disk and putting one big XP NTFS slice on it. What -- preferably free under Linux -- can resize an NTFS slice? If I could resize it, then I could drag it around and get Linux on the box. On the off chance that anyone has managed to hack the Toshiba Satellite 1135 recovery CD to allow a custom install, I'll ask here for those people to drop me a line since that would be useful for the future :-) TIA & HAND :-D -- David T-G * There is too much animal courage in (play) davidtg@justpickone.org * society and not sufficient moral courage. I don't know of any linux programs that do this
(though they probably exist), but the easiest way is
to use Partition Magic and resize the NTSF in Windows.
It also creates a lovely new ext2 partition all ready
to install SuSE.
A word of warning though, SuSE 8.1 doesn't work great
on Toshiba Satellites (from my many attempts). 8.2 on
the other way works straight out of the box (well
whatever that means in Linux).

James, et al -- ...and then James Philp said... % % I don't know of any linux programs that do this % (though they probably exist), but the easiest way is As a matter of fact, I was pointed to one, and it has worked dandily so far. It's ntfsresize, it has a sourceforge page, and it is, conveniently enough, on the Knoppix CD that I burned and used to test the Sat itself, so I've been playing with my slices :-) Taking this route rather than hacking their recovery CD means that I can't reload Win without also torching my Linux installation, but I don't expect to have to reload Win, and I can probably shoehorn Linux onto my external SCSI drive as a backup anyway. Now, for my next trick, I am about to dd the entire resized partition to an identical partition at the right spot on the hard drive so that I can then wipe out the original and put Linux at the front of the disk where it belongs :-) [I'm going with 1G swap for this 512M machine, 12G of Linux, 7G of XP on NTFS, 7G of shared vfat32 space, and perhaps about 900M of slice for a hibernation partition if I can get that working. I *really* don't want to have to leave Win at the front of the disk but I'm running short of time and my have to. Does anyone know how to give hda3 the bits it wants? Why? Does it really matter? Linux can live anywhere, but windows can't: that's the way it is, unfortunately. If Windows has being designed thinking it is alone in he world, Linux had to be designed to live with it... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Does it really matter? Yes; because of variable-geometry disks, the "cylinders" at the front contain more data and are thus faster. Since I'm going to be spending most of my time in Linux, I want that to be in the fast place. % % Linux can live anywhere, but windows can't: that's the way it is, % unfortunately. Win XP has a fixmbr command accessable from it's recovery console, kinda like fdisk /mbr from Win98. have a look at resizentfs It's on the SuSE CDs' rescue system. I never used it, but it says it does what its name implies. Best regards :o) Johnny :o)
