[opensuse] Fans off, not cool!
Hi, I did a zypper dup on my computer the other day and as best I can remember the following were updated: kernel-default kernel-default-devel kernel-devel kernel-source kernel-kmp kernel-firmware Now, the cooling fan on my laptop doesn't work at any temperature. I had been running the latest kernel-3.0 rc from kernel head, now I am back to a 2.6.37 kernel after the update. I have looked in the Kernel:Head repository and don't find the previous release candidate kernel rpms available anymore, it seems they have been erased. Is there any chance that the kernel guys that maintain the repo could repost the latest kernel rc with the previous stuff that makes the fans work back to the reppositories so that I can reinstall them and get my cooling fan working on my laptop again? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

i think some changes took / are taking place in the Kernel:/Head repos. the 3.0.rc kernels are in Kernel:/HEAD/standard now (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/standard/) -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the info. I had seen the 3.0 rc kernels in the /HEAD/standard repository and tried to add it as a repository a couple of days before I posted to the mailing list. Yast wouldn't accept the url address as a repository, so that prompted me to post to the list. I tried to input the repository address again just now and it is added to my repository list in Yast. I did another zypper dup and I have the cooling fan function back again after the kernels were updated to the latest 3.0 rc kernel. I don't know why it wouldn't accept the address before, but its working now.

I had a bug filed for this problem starting in Opensuse 11.1 and continuing up to version 11.4. The solution seems to be these 3.0 rc kernels, the cooling fans work fine with them.

You are certainly right about that, and I have been meaning to edit the /etc/zypp file to accept multiversion kernels. I suddenly became highly motivated to do it after this problem, and did it right after I lost the fan function. I modified the repository address in yast and got the option to install the 3.0 rc kernels back. After a quick zypper dup I have the new kernels installed and got the fan function back. Thanks for the help.
