[opensuse] Weird network issue - solved

Such a simple thing ... but not understood. The routing table had no gateway entry but the Yast configuration clearly shows the gateway. I manually entered the default gateway and all started working ok. Now I have to determine why Yast wasn't doing its job. Your problem is that Yast is generally not used to set up wifi. WIFI is usually set up by network manager. Gateways and dns servers are provided by the dhcp server. Your dhcp client (dhclient, or dhcpcd, your choice) uses these things passed from the dhcp server to establish its ip, default route, gateway and dns servers. Since the other machines on your wifi seem to work, the problem sounds like you are trying to configure wifi with Yast which is seldom what you really want for wifi. Its more suited for wired connections. Tell yast to us network manager for wifi. In fact, you can use network manager for both wired and wifi, which is the normal thing for laptops. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorta true, as far as it goes... but the final piece of the puzzle (why Yast did not set the gateway) came when I noticed that each usb port had a unique device name... not just wlan0 or wlan1... oh, no, nothing as simple as that. Since I was configuring a static IP, I had not noticed that the damned Yast program wasn't picking up the correct device name. Once I put in the correct name, the gateway was written and everything worked ok. Mystery solved. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
