[opensuse] Updating OpenSuse 10.3
System:Configuration:Install Software calls a title-less YaST2 module where updating the system is hidden under: Package:All Packages:Update I configured it to use the following repositories: Filter:Repositories: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:10.3/standard/ http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.3 http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.3/ http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.3/ Is this a good choice ? Unfortunately i don't see how to edit or change the list there. And in the Change Log i miss the version names in the list. Updating Channels in Smart-Gui Package Manager is just as awkward, and it lists different addresses: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/ RPM System (no URL) Is the first just an alias of the URL used in Yast ? What is openSUSE Updater using ? It currently reports two security updates i don't see in Yast2. And Yast2 just updated a few apps that Updater did not see. You can rightly say that i don't understand how to update OpenSuse 10.3, but i would also say it's a bit of a mess :-) Especially in contrast to the professionalism that goes into building all those updates. cl to the rescue: yast -l will list the individual yast modules available on your system interesting modules: sw_single update inst_source online_update online_update_setup the cl is *still* "A Good Thing(TM!)".
I configured it to use the following repositories: Filter:Repositories: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:10.3/standard/ http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.3 http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.3/ http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.3/ Is this a good choice ?
Yes, but you might as well ask me if you made a good choice when you wed :^)
Unfortunately i don't see how to edit or change the list there. And in the Change Log i miss the version names in the list.
I cannot answer for sure, but "inst_source" and "online_update_setup" would be likely candidates
Updating Channels in Smart-Gui Package Manager is just as awkward,
you are voicing an opinion w/o knowledge. And, for the most part, I prefer the cl, but the gui is handy at times.
and it lists different addresses: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/RPM System (no URL)
yes, the ones you configured. the last is what is installed on your box.
Is the first just an alias of the URL used in Yast ?
do not understand the question???? First what and smart does *not* use YaST in any manner that I am aware.
What is openSUSE Updater using ? It currently reports two security updates i don't see in Yast2. And Yast2 just updated a few apps that Updater did not see.
You can rightly say that i don't understand how to update OpenSuse 10.3, but i would also say it's a bit of a mess :-)
again, you are making opinionated statements where you lack sufficient knowledge :^)
Especially in contrast to the professionalism that goes into building all those updates.

present a scenario and ask specific questions and maybe I/we can better help you to understand. Thanks, but i only use the CLI when i have to, as i use computers not to learn about them but to serve other interests.
Telling me that i should not state the GUI is lacking without knowing the inner workings is like a librarian telling me to do a course with librarians before showing them part of the books are not reachable. Do you know how i can change owner (Message-ID: <474F2FEB.80503@user-land.org>) ? your choice, not disputed
as i use computers not to learn about them but to serve other interests.
no one questioned your usage, are you questioning mine?
Telling me that i should not state the GUI is lacking without knowing the inner workings is like a librarian telling me to do a course with librarians before showing them part of the books are not reachable.
I inferred that you opionated w/o proper background. Your reading skills were never in question.
Do you know how i can change owner (Message-ID: <474F2FEB.80503@user-land.org>) ?
yes, but would require using a different email client. I do not know how using thunderbird, if I understand the question... mine contains the date and time followed by a random 2 letter and 5 digit sequence and my ip. - -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHT2EJClSjbQz1U5oRAm7mAKCkJHUuOHLzVg2p4MJiaqSO7WJeCwCePVl9 mXTdz9b3mU+6ZOhROOL3dpk= =EPLd -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The list of repos can be modified via starting YaST, module 'Software Repositories'.
And in the Change Log i miss the version names in the list.

What is openSUSE Updater using ?
The first list.
It currently reports two security updates i don't see in Yast2. And Yast2 just updated a few apps that Updater did not see.
This is because openSUSE uses thing called 'patches'. A patch is a bugfix, and it might mean to fix several packages. Thus, applying a patch is different to updating the packages. openSUSE updater applies patches only by default. the 'Install Software' module updates the packages. Stano

Yast could also show the patches currently being offered and the Updater could offer to open the software installer.
I configured it to use the following repositories: Filter:Repositories: Unfortunately i don't see how to edit or change the list there. The list of repos can be modified via starting YaST, module 'Software Repositories'. It should be made easy to call that module from here.
And in the Change Log i miss the version names in the list.
