Config: crappy computer (Acer P3 450Mhz, 96Mb RAM). About 50 users who read their mail using pop3 (just few times a day). Server is swapping most of the time but it works (I don't think I'll have time to move it to new hardware anytime soon, will be busy for 1 or 2 weeks). SuSE 7.0 kernel 2.4.20 (tried with old 2.2.x kernel too). ======================= /var/log/mail shows: Oct 8 09:54:27 myserver ipop3d[1114]: pop3 service init from x.x.x.x Oct 8 09:54:37 myserver ipop3d[1114]: No such file or directory while reading line user=??? host=host.domain [x.x.x.x] /var/log/messages shows: Oct 8 09:54:27 myserver ipop3d[1114]: connect from x.x.x.x (x.x.x.x) A working, older entry from /var/log/messages: Oct 3 09:01:34 myserver ipop3d[28427]: connect from x.x.x.y (x.x.x.y) Oct 3 09:01:38 myserver PAM-warn[28427]: service: pop [on terminal: <unknown>] Oct 3 09:01:38 myserver PAM-warn[28427]: user: (uid=0) -> mypopuser [remote: ?nobody@?nowhere] Oct 3 09:01:38 myserver ipop3d[28427]: Auth user=mypopuser host=host2.domain [x.x.x.y] nmsgs=4/4 Oct 3 09:01:38 myserver ipop3d[28427]: Logout user=mypopuser host=host2.domain [x.x.x.y] nmsgs=4 ndele=0 ====================== Note: x.x.x.x, x.x.x.y are 2 of my IP addresses (client computers) myserver is the name of the Linux server host.domain and host2.domain are the full dns names of the client computers mypopuser is on ordinary pop user who'd like to read his/her mail. This problem started yesterday, like 10 users cant read their mail now. Used tcpdump to see if any traffic is going on and yes it seems that the clients are sending lotsa packets to the server. Outlook says that time-out error blah blah... that doesnt helps a lot I think. And sometimes it says that it cannot communicate with the srever. I would really appreciate some help on this. Googled it but havent found anything useful. Tried to remove the users directories, mail, account, readd them again but it won't work (someone suggested this at the redhat website on some discussion board). Private mail too please, I am spammed with mails & work too now, it'd be easier for me. Begs the question, what changed on the system prior to this happening? Since you're running a notoriously insecure pop daemon, if port 110 is not restricted to a trusted network you probably shouldn't rule out someone else making changes to the system for you. -- -ckm
