Thanks Wow! that was cool. My KMail in the KDE2.1 beta crashed and when I restarted it, the whole message poped back up. Impressive!
Chris, The Perl news groups were helpful for me. Perl is a cult unto its own, and I did get a measure of RTFM from the folks there. I saw a book by Sebesta the other day on Perl. I don't know if the book is as good as his _Concepts of Programming Languages_ but if anybody can treat Perl as a real programming language Sebesta can. Perl in a Nutshell is a good reference. There are also many good resurces http://www.perl.com/pub. And many perl hacker swear by the O'Reiley Perl Book. The perl docs are actually very good, but are not the most accessible for the beginner. I'm not sure of the consequences of upgrading the Perl on SuSE. They are running an ancient version. I remember once reading the meta-data in the SuSE Perl RPM. It said something like 'without perl there would be no linux'. That statement indicates to me that playing with the perl on your linux box is a serious issue. Lenz has some perl stuff on his SuSE ftp directory. Perhaps he can address this. Steve

Besides that, I have found the comp.lang.perl.misc community to be very helpful and kind.
