[opensuse] Can't get closed captions with handbrake
I'm trying to put some of my DVDs onto a chip for my tablet so that I can watch them on the long boring trips to offices, conferences and other destination. I'm using handbrake-gtk, the GUI for this. Its a nice tool, pretty fast. Some of the DVDs transcribe OK. OK being that I include the closed captions. Yes I know about headphones, sorry, that's not enough when when I find my hearing aids are hurting from wearing them too long. Or when I turn them off so as 'suppress extraneous noise'. But some DVDs don't seem to result in the CCs being there. Same settings as others (thanks to the 'save setting' mechanism). On some, the 'subtitles' just give the chapter number as text. unhelpful. This is puzzling because if I play the DVD from the drive using the same tools - I prefer SMplayer since it has easy skip-back - the closed captions are there. A few observations: The "add closed captions when available" checkbox in "subtitle defaults" tab won't stay clicked, but that hold true for the DVD where I do get CC, so I'm not sure of its significance. The above is true even if I change the 'preferred language' from "Any" to "English". Under the 'subtitle list' tab I've tried adding 'English (closed caption}', the plain "Closed Caption", and 'all', each in turn. Yes the options for 'eng' do appear in Smlayer under the 'subtitles' section when I try playing it, but they do not appear as they do when I play the DVD directly using smplayer. Somehow, with some DVDs, handbrake is not trascoding the closed captions. I had to play some with options to rip some dvd of mine. I ripped all captions and all languages, but instead to .avi I had to choose .mkv as the destination. Well I tried that, sort of. All languages, all captions and left it at .m4v Playback with SMplayer does now have closed captions. Its seems excessive and overkill to me. I have no need for the space taken by French or Spanish. maybe I could use then for 'language instruction'? Well, I don't need all the languages either, two would suffice, but for archival purposes I keep all. Who knows who will inherit my disk ;-p It was also trivial to select all. The captions should take little space. They are saved as some sort of graphic stream. Some rippers run an OCR on the captions and store as text instead (at ridiculous small size).
