[SLE] continuous high load while nothing's happening??
Hello all, My machine continuously is running with a load of 1.0 (was 1.9) while idling. I already brought it down by limiting the nscd threads and stopping all daemons that aren't necessary, but is still stays at a minimum load of 1.0 This is not what it used to be. I am running kernel 2.2.14 Does anyone know where to look for? Is there a way to see which processes are causing the high load? Included is a result of 'ps ax' PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 1 ? To add to the info Xosview tells me that interrupt 0 is continuously high. This is the interrupt for the timer device ?? How can that be? Stopping apmd and kcmlaptop does not change this. Spoke to soon about apmd and kcmlaptop. They are the culprits. they eache raise the usage about .4 to .5 thats not good! -- Sell what you use, use what you sell. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I have downloaded, compiled and installed the latest version of apmd (3.0final, I was running 2.5) my load has dropped *significantly* from 1.3 to 0.1!! And if I stop working on it for a while it even goes to 0.0 wow Thanks for the input BB, Arjen -- Sell what you use, use what you sell. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I would suspect that netscape has done something silly and is stuck in a loop of some sort. I sometimes get this problem on my boxes. A good tool to use is "top" as this will dynamically show you what process is using the most cpu time. Dont worry about the timer interrupt, it should be running all the time (100 times a second I think). Netscape is running because I am writing my email with it. It' s not doing anything silly. :-) Top only tells me the processor usage. Not which causes the high load factor. Memory and disk usage will cause high load.. If your disk is not thrashing and there is not much processor usage going on then it is memory causing your prob.. Press "M" i think in top to sort by memory usage.. Cya Matthew Matthew King: Network Engineer, Cable & Wireless Optus. My ICQ#: 2342475 Message me!
