[opensuse] Two HP devices - compatibility question
Hi, I wander about Leap compatibility of these two devices: - HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28nw (T6B80A), or - HP LaserJet Pro M452nw (CF388A). Is there anyone on this list who can share some user experience? The first one is multifunctional and I wander very much about scanning part. Never used scanner on network before. Vendor pages are not clear on Linux support, neither on printing nor on scanning side. The second looks like more serious hardware. It's just printer (no MF) and vendor pages suggest that OpenSUSE is supported. I checked on https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Hardware, and found nothing about these devices. Can anyone confirm that any of these teo work on Leap? TIA & best regards, Radule

I tested recently an "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M278" which I wonder if it is similar to your "MFP M28nw". I googled, and the photo is different. It is smaller, has WiFi but perhaps not ethernet cable. Probably not dual side. The MFP M278 I tried prints fine in Linux, once I updated hplip from the "OBS: Printing" repo. I did not try to scan on Linux, but I found out that on Windows it scans at 300 dpi only. If you plug an USB stick, it can scan and save on the stick directly, which is a failsafe if finally scan in Linux fails. The page I'm looking at (<https://intercompras.com/p/multifuncional-hp-laserjet-pro-m28nw-x-dpi-ppm-usb-adf-hojas-145432>) says it copies at 600 x 400 dpi BW, which is better than the 300x300 I tested. Interstingly, the technical paper at hp doesn't list the resolution (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05550216). I do not find the "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28nw" at the hp site, though. Maybe it depends on country. Is it BW, not colour, perhaps?

Ok, the M280nw is listed by hplip people as fully supported, including scan to PC. But not listed by openprinting. It is similar in looks to the MFP M278 I tried. I don't see the scan resolution on HP page. Ah, yes, 300x300. 1200x1200 on flat surface. Oh? maybe means the auto feeder scans at 300 only. (I don't post the link, I got it in Spanish) I think it is a good purchase. I would go for this one or similar. Mind: it is big. The only fault I find is that the resolution of the scanner is not big. Note: The OCR software it comes with, in Windows, is very good. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Good point. One of the links I found at the HP site listed the exact part numbers of the toner cartridge the printer would accept. And they are expensive. Looking again at the "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M280nw" printer, a 203X cartridge (black) is 116.90€ at HP site ((3200 pages). The 203A cyan cartridge is 92.90€ (1300 pages; the 203X cyan makes 2500 pages). The site warns that the printer has a security feature that blocks usage of third party cartridges that do not have a certain chip. Security feature, they say. Also "anti-fraud technology". The HP site lists a bunch of possible cartridges in different capacities: 1400 pages, 3500, or 3200. The printer comes with "courtesy" cartridges with half capacity. Yes, I've checked it even before narrowing my list. I checked local prices of new and "recycled" cartridges (third party). I also checked the capacity - number of pages printed per cartridge. Also, I have some unofficial info from local services on how often these devices are got repaired. I only missed the info on Linux (Leap) compatibility/support. :) Looking at HP page that Carlos pointed me to, it seems that both are OK with Linux. At least equally OK.
Good point.

I've noticed that printed page capacity of m452 is approximately twice better comparing to mfp280. This makes it cheaper in longer time expenses. No scanning/copying though. Here where I live, the two are selling at same prices, so initial cost is equal. Later, mfc280 will spend twice more cartridges comparing to m452. And cartridges for them do not differ much in price,

I am aware of that.

Here, official prices for cartridges for m452 are more expensive, about double for the colour ones: 174,91€ 410X black (~6.500 pages) 234,90€ 410X cyan (~5.000 pages) 234,90€ 410X yellow 234,90€ 410X magenta The 410A makes 2300 pages. Those would cost similarly as the MFP cartridges, I guess.

I'm unsure my older HP printer has that, I do not remember reading about that feature in that clear text. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
