[opensuse] very weird error on make install for netspeed-applet
Hello All, I was trying to install the netspeed gnome applet because i could not find it in any of the repos i normally trust with smart. The configure ran just fine, so did the make... then on the make install I get this at the end /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 sv/figures/settings.png /usr/local/share/gnome/help/netspeed_applet/sv/figures/settings.png /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 C/figures/wavelan.png /usr/local/share/gnome/help/netspeed_applet/C/figures/wavelan.png /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 C/figures/wavelan.png /usr/local/share/gnome/help/netspeed_applet/de/figures/wavelan.png /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 C/figures/wavelan.png /usr/local/share/gnome/help/netspeed_applet/sv/figures/wavelan.png /bin/sh ../mkinstalldirs /usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 netspeed_applet-C.omf /usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet/netspeed_applet-C.omf /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 netspeed_applet-de.omf /usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet/netspeed_applet-de.omf /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 netspeed_applet-sv.omf /usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet/netspeed_applet-sv.omf scrollkeeper-update -p /var/lib/scrollkeeper -o /usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet /bin/sh: line 3: 11269 Segmentation fault scrollkeeper-update -p "`scrollkeeper-config --pkglocalstatedir`" -o "/usr/local/share/omf/netspeed_applet" make[2]: *** [install-doc-omf] Error 139 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/tester/Desktop/netspeed_applet-0.14/docs' make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/tester/Desktop/netspeed_applet-0.14/docs' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 This makes no sense to me, what is this? I did run it as root, just in my test users home directory -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

ther is your problem, some application segfaults there.
This makes no sense to me,
It makes a lot of sense. what is this? a bug.

segfault is short for (memory) segmentation fault. It means a program has tried to access memory that was not allocated to it. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmentation_fault You can tell this is an error as it refers to a line number (probably in the file in the line above). This is to help track down what is causing the error.

Though it's not very revealing. You need to see what the configure script was doing at that point (use the "less" command). It may give you a clue.
what is this?
a bug.
More specifically, it's most likely a bug in the gnome applet. Otherwise it would be in the package repositories. You need to ask in a gnome mailing list (after doing some investigation: see http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Russel and all others, thank you for the tip. You make a good point
about why the applet is not available easily anyways and stuff like
this is probably it. I never had a compiled source break after the
./configure or make steps, especially in make install. I thought that
was th easy part. :)
I will follow up with gnome as you suggested.
