[opensuse] Install leap-15.0 with nvidia card
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/a0dc34647b9e9ae42869e7cde0ffd65a.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Hello, I am trying to install openSUSE-Leap-15.0-DVD-x86_64.iso on a desktop with an nvidia quadro 2000 card. On the splash screen I select the monitor resolution and then choose "Install". Then kernel/installer is loaded (with progress bar indication on the bottom of the screen). When installer starts up, the screen turns to black and the monitor switches off, saying "going to sleep". Switching to VT1 (with CTRL-ALT-F1) works, but when I switch back to the installer (CTRL-ALT-F7), everyhting is dark again. Searching the net finds me many information about installing the nvidia drivers ON A RUNNING SYSTEM. But how is one supposed to install the system in the first place? Did you try without selecting a resolution?

Yes. In this case, even CTL-ALT-F1 won't work. :-((

Try booting with nomodeset or no kms. Check out the troubleshooting section of the graphics card wiki: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_graphics_cards#Troubleshooting_thing... On Tue, Aug 21, 2018 at 8:00 AM Josef Wolf <jw@raven.inka.de> wrote:

tty1 is busy. Try Ctrl-Alt-F2 if a shell prompt is what you're looking for. You simply can not use proprietary nvidia drivers during the installation. You have to use what is already there in the installation media, ie nouveau. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Ummm, It looks like this is a different issue. I have a KVM switch connected to four computers. Looks like the screen dies when the KVM switch is switched to a different computer during the time when the installer starts up. This happens no matter which video/fb mode is selected. It appears that this behavior is not tied to the installer. I just THOUGHT it is the installer, since this was the first time I have seen this behavior. Instead, it looks like it is tied to DisplayPort/KVM/nvidia. The screen breaks when: - Installer starts up. - the computer is rebooted while KVM is switched to another computer. In this case, even the BIOS screen won't show up!!! - KVM is switched to another computer while text mode is active (e.g. VT1) Looks like communication between graphics card and monitor doesn't work properly. Nay ideas/help? BTW: this is an aten cs1924 -- Josef Wolf jw@raven.inka.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Whether it is installer or KVM, the approach I have taken is to install and use the default nouveau driver (it is really really good -- unless you are gaming or using Compiz, etc...) After the initial install, and after you have confirmed your KVM behavior is correct, then add the nvidia repo and install the proprietary driver. You should be able to have the same behavior with Nvidia you had with nouveau. (you will also have the same performance in all by the high FPS apps) Give it a try and report back. I have a Quadro 3000M in my laptop and it works fine with/without Nvidia. (I do have it running on Nvidia not, just, well, just.... I was equally happy with nouveau) -- David C. Thanks,
When the DVD boots and you get the menu, type "nomodeset" on the kernel command line before finally pressing ENTER to start the actual installation. BC -- "Truth isn't truth."
