[opensuse] DOCX files and Novell OpenOffice
I had heard that the Novell version of OpenOffice can open .DOCX files, from Word 2007. I tried several different files and found that while the text is there, formatting, tables, bullet lists, images etc., tend to take a beating, to the point that it appears the only use for .DOCX support in OpenOffice, is to recover text only, from Word 2007 files. It is not suitable for much beyond that. This comparison was conducted using the most recent update of OpenOffice on OpenSUSE 10.3 and also Word Viewer 2003 & Compatibility Pack on XP. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

you need the open office openxml translator:
I have installed that and it does not appear to make much difference. Also, my understanding was that v2.3 included support for OOXML. Is that package even necessary for the latest version of OpenOffice? It is also an i586 package. Will it work with 64 bit OpenOffice? -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Apparently it works with the 32 bit, but not 64 bit versions of OpenOffice. My main system is 64 bit and my ThinkPad is 32. I can open those files properly only on the ThinkPad. Considering so many computers are running 64 bits these days, perhaps someone at Novell could get on the ball and fix this? -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

from the web site I sent earlier: "product description The OpenXML Translator provides support for opening and saving Microsoft* OpenXML-formatted word processing documents (.docx) in OpenOffice.org. The odfconverter-1.0.0-2.oxt file works only with Windows, and the odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm file works only on SUSE(R) Linux Enterprise, SUSE Linux, and openSUSE. On both platforms, the OpenXML Translator works only with the latest Novell(R) edition of OpenOffice.org." I have not had any problems with it. Not sure what might be going on in your case. Hi everyone, - you speak of things I can't seem to find? - the odfconverter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm seems to be what I'm looking for...but where? - second; I'm on SuSE10.2. Could I just uninstall OOversion-whatever-is-on-my-machine and then install (?? how, actually) the Novell edition. I only seem to be able to find a pile of RPM's at "go-oo.org". Would I download the bunch and go "rpm -Uvh *.rpm", really? -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The covert is available here. http://download.novell.com/index.jsp?product_id=&search=Search&families=3402&version=&date_range=&keywords=&sort_by=&x=35&y=9 However, it only works in 32 bit OO. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you installed the OOXML translator for Open Office? I have not had any problems viewing files then in all its formatting. -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hello, I hope that this might answer some questions (late but...): The openSUSE build of OOo-2.3 includes initial implementation of OpenXML import filters for DOCX, PPTX and XLSX. Many features have not been implemented yet, so it loads correctly only simple documents. It is included in both 32-bit and 64-bit packages. You might try the latest version from Build Service: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/OpenOffice.org:/UNSTABLE/ I hope that it would improve very fast. As already mentioned. You might use the "OpenOffice OpenXML Translator". It is a MONO-based extension, see http://odf-converter.sourceforge.net/. As already mentioned, you might get the current version for OOo at http://download.novell.com/index.jsp?product_id=&search=Search&families=3402&version=&date_range=&keywords=&sort_by=&x=35&y=9 It provides import/export filters for DOCX. We are just porting the latest "OpenOffice OpenXML Translator" version for OpenOffice.org. It will provide import/export filters for DOCX, PPTX, and XSLX. It should be available within the following few weeks. Note: The latest packages OOo-2.3.1 in the Build Service have a bug. They ignore the "OpenOffice OpenXML Translator" if you start the application using the app-specific wrappers (oowriter, ooimpress, oocalc). Unfortunately, these wrappers are associated with these documents in KDE and GNOME. You have to open the document by the Open/Save dialog or using the generic wrapper (ooffice). We are going to fix it in the Build Service ASAP. -- Best Regards, Petr Mladek software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: pmladek@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 952 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Forgot to mention that the 64-bit OOo does not find the currently available "OpenOffice OpenXML Translator". It is necessary to provide some compat symlinks. It will be fixed in the new version of the translator.
